First rimfire rifle, opinions and suggestions?

I'm looking to get my first rimfire semi-automatic rifle and I chose the Ruger 10/22(Mainly due to availability of parts because everything I touch breaks).

I'm wondering which of the following models of 10/22 I should get?
Ruger 10/22 STANDARD MODEL
Ruger 10/22 Stainless Synthetic Semi-Auto Rifle
(Before you ask, I don't want the takedown model)

Furthermore, what cleaning supplies and lubricants would you suggest?
 
I was given a stainless 10/22 and in my opinion it's the better of the two. It's nice being able to bring it inside from the cold or rain and not have to give it a wipe down every time. If your going to swap barrels it doesn't matter as the receivers aluminum on all models. I give mine the lightest smear of Mobil 1 synthetic oil on the top of the bolt, recoil spring and hammer face every couple bricks and that's it. I haven't cleaned my barrel in 5k+ shots and can still put 5 shots into a toonie-ish sized group at 50 with tech sights. I use a one piece Dewey rod for cleaning the barrel, but that may never see my 10/22 again.

I like using a bore snake after each shooting session on my .22's. Hoppe's oil down the bore, delivered by patch from a cheapo aluminum rod if I was shooting on a humid day or won't be shooting for a while.
The snake really seems to gets the "soot" out. I'd go for the stainless over the standard.
 
Depends on what you plan to upgrade with really. The 10/22 is the best $349 platform to spend $12-1500 on. There are entire books written on upgrading 10/22s. Best of luck on what ever you decide
 
I know its not on your list but check out the dsp ( deluxe sporter). Gives you a nicer stock. If you like the black synthetic better go for it. For cleaning just get a bore snake and some g96 complete gun treatment.
 
First rifle..or first rimfire rifle? I don't know anything about your shooting experience, but could likely make a good argument for starting-off with a bolt gun instead. If that's a "been there/done that" for you..then ignore what I've said. If not, search on this forum a little.

Lots of guys love semis in spite of their limitations in stock configuration. New shooters sometimes expect the same accuracy, whether they buy a 10/22 or a Marlin XT. (for example) Personally, I like accurate guns but it can take a fair amount of $ to get a 10/22 shooting as well as even an entry-level Marlin bolt gun. At least as much $ as a CZ bolt gun you could just start with.

First firearm and first rimfire firearm, I have shot before and am experienced and i'd like a semiautomatic firearm specifically.
 
Just be aware that ruger 10/22 rifles aren't always the most accurate. Several other brands easily surpass them for out of the box accuracy. I'm not trying to sway your choice just throwing that out there

^very true. Marlin 795/Marlin 60 come to mind. However, provided you go into any gun knowing the strengths/weaknesses...it's fun to explore what's out there, what the options are, etc.
 
The model 60 is hard to beat if you're a tube mag fan. The 795 are about the best budget gun for accuracy. Just find one with centered sights. Savage 64 is another solid performer. Personally I like old cooey 64 models
I don't have any ruger 10/22 rifles anymore. They're fun to tinker with. Parts are everywhere

Any gun deserves a beak in period when I got my Marlin Model 60 a few years back it took a few hundred rounds of ammo, or about an hour or so at the range, for the action to smooth out and the gun to reliably function, I was having a few failures for the bolt to fully close so I was getting a few light strikes on the rim and therefore failures to fire. As the round count went up the failures ceased and the trigger noticeably improved as well.

When it comes to accuracy my experience is the Marlin Model 60 will shoot tighter groups, out of the box, than a Ruger 10/22 will out of the box. And the Marlin cost less too.
 
I found there was only one way to settle the marlin vs ruger debate.. Out of the box MY marlin had a worse trigger yet slightly more accurate with its preffered ammo. I think i paid something ridiculous like 180 for it. They both serve me quite well and are equally relaible when using stock magazines and quality ammo. One thing that sways my bias towards the 10/22 ever so slightly is the reciever width and flush magazine at the balance point makes for a great rifle to carry in the hand. The 795 forces me to do the "shocker" to carry at the balance point.
