First run with the new checkering tools .....

I find that my problem , it looks good, But I will just touch this little bit , A rabbit hole, you want to stay out off. Great job.
When you buy the tools make sure to get a bunch of extra cutters, as they wear out I use the worn ones for final cut to smooth it out/polish ,and keep your old tooth brushes.

Where did you get the tools?

I got mine from HVH in Winnipeg, but he is gone now
A stock maker in Sk sell them also,
RIW sporting and Survival supply

If you just want one to play with ot touch up, TRade Ex has a single with handle for 10.oo, listed, sometimes takes a bit to find it, assoc. I think.
If you get into it , get lots of singles, fine and course, you can get doubles and triples, I don't like them, but a right and left double , one side smooth other cutter is what you want for starting ( spacing) 16 line / inch is the usual, you can go to 28, but that is not for beginners. you can get a set , or one at a time, you want about 3 handles, and good eyes Young is better, I don't do much any more .

Careful now.
If word gets out about your keen eye and steady hand, you'll have a line-up of friends, relatives, and wannabe customers at your door looking to have some checkering work done. My compliments to you. It's something I've thought about trying, but have never purchased the tools, in part because I just don't think my patience and skills would be up to the task.
Well done!

I find I can work about 20 min. than have to take a break, coffee , shoot , come back to it , If the eyes go , it can go to hell in a hurry.
you can buy power ones, but what fun would that be?
The lay out, and first cut is the make or break, after the lines are layed out , it is not hard, just straight lines, stay in the track.

I’ve got a file I’m working on for checkering...an electronic file. I found a file online that will run on my laser engraver. Needed some work...still does...to debug/rewrite a bit, then figure out power settings & speeds. Right now it runs really nice, crisp checkering but the speed & power are both out of whack; too much char though that does look pretty cool on light tone wood. I would LOVE to be able to do this by hand, eyes are way too old though

My back is the first to go, eyes are still quite good , But you totally lost me when you start talking electric files, I post a picture, and run email, after that, hell , I'm lost, funny thing is I was trained back in B&W T.V days as a engineer.
My son has a water jet, where he teaches, now that is something else

First attempt at it ......I'm very envious........that looks like my 5-6 attempt , and I never got any better most likely your going to go from great to master.

Nice work !

A cradle is nice I made mine years ago.

Nice work! I’d like to try it, but the tools are costly. If I could get into it for like $50 I’d probably give it a go. Great start though

When I bought mine , don't remember what the set was , but I have bought more handles for about 6.00 each and cutters where 3-4.oo each , but that was 20 yrs ago
It was the beginners set, as I was a beginner, at that time, under a 100.oo I am sure.
Starting a new stock you would want 3 handles, If you are just re cutting old checkering 1 or 2 would be enough, one if you just change cutters from course to fine .
Re-cutting, better to use paint stripper first and get rid of the old finish and dirt.
I have not done a lot of new stocks, more re-cutting and some handgun stuff. some here will have done a lot more than I have.
