First Shotgun Recommendation - Beretta 1301 VS. ???

Thanks for the offer brybenn! You are about 2.5hrs away from me. Perhaps when the weather get a tad warmer, but I appreciate it!

Only had it for about a week and I've only put about 500 shots downrange so far, but am very impressed with the 1301 comp. I thought the furniture was a bit cheezy at first but it works. A +1 mag extension and a matchsaver were the first things I did to it, then a sticker on the receiver behind the bolt release (I'm not very good at loading from the matchsaver yet and the finish on the gun isn't terribly durable).

Only other thing I can think of is I'm probably going to get a modified choke for it and see what that does for me.

The included choke (ic) knocks over the 36" high poppers I made well enough but I want my shot tighter. At 20 yds the spread is pretty wide.

That being said, I highly recommend. This is an awesome shotgun, and yes you can dump em fast.

Is anyone hitting clays well with a 1301?

I have more budget for a really nice shotgun if it's good for both clays and 3-gun, but finding something that's good for both is a bit elusive and I'm wondering if the 1301 might be it or not. Thinking 24" comp.
 
I use the 1301 comp 21" for skeet and I'm doing well. I'm averaging 95%ish. I find it excellent for skeet and for waterfowl hunting from a kayak. I broke mine in with 100 rounds of heavy loads 1 7/8oz and now it cycles 3/4oz loads and my 7/8oz reloads flawlessly. I didn't have a chance to get out waterfowling with it but the shorter length of pull works great when shouldering I in a seat wearing waders and a lifejacket
 
I have the Tac Order Versa Max, amazing gun and shoots 3.5" so shell wise you'd legally get an extra 2 3/4" for matches. I really like the 21" Beretta Comp Pro in a tie. My primary use is 3gun. 'd also never order another Benelli, 2 bad experiences with them.

For the money I'd wait on the Beretta A300 Patrol to come out here. It looks bang for buck to be the best go.

So I own a 1301 Tactical , 1301 Pro Comp and an M4. If I had to go with only 1 , it would be the 1301 Tactical closely followed by the 1301 Pro Comp. I only keep the M4 around as it looks slick in my gun room
 
Versa Max does have ability for both regular length (18) and 28 inch barrel for clays and skeet

Issue is finding it these days

It seems Versa Max is hard to find

930 is Okay...
M4 way too expensive
1301 seems like goldilocks right now

Will take a look at A300 Patrol though,

What kind of target practice are people running?
 
I like my pumps. They are every bit as fast as an auto with a little practice, hold more ammo, and are easier to take down/clean.

When I say "pumps" there really are only two. Remington Wingmaster, preferably pre-1990, and the Mossberg 590A1. All others need not apply.
 
I have both the 1301 and the M4. The 1301 is a lot of polymer/plastic which is why it is lighter. The M4 is a better quality gun which is why it’s heavier, it actually has metal components. The take down is also easier than the 1301, a much simpler gas design that still stands on its own far and above.

The 1301 is faster cycling, but the takedown… the bolt is attached to the rails, I just don’t dig it after shooting the M4 for years.

I would never pick my 1301 over my M4 for a combat purpose, too much plastic to fail from bumps and bruises. Everyone who says they would take a 1301 over an M4 likely doesn’t own an M4. jmo
