First shotgun, Semi or Pump?

Hard to argue with a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 as a first shotgun. I'm partial to Mossberg but many prefer Remington, they each have their strong points.

Find a used one in decent shape, as long as you don't over pay you'll be able to make most if not all of your money back down the road if you decide to upgrade to a different gun or shotgunning just doesn't tickle your fancy.

I'd go for a cheap pump action with a set of chokes and see where it takes you. I read a lot about it and did some trap myself, it is just more fun to have a little challenge.

Most clay shooters prefer over under shotguns. Something to consider but maybe check out what others are shooting where you plan to participate

I am leaning towards Mossberg 500 myself. I was looking at the Beretta A300 and Winchester SX4 but I realized i will be only loading one round at a time anyways. So budget is around under 1200, but for a pump the most I think im willing to spend is around 400-500.. the Mossberg seems like the logical choice

If it’s your first shotgun a pump action is pretty much a must, buy one with removable chokes. Spend the rest of your budget on ammo and have fun.
