First shotgun suggestions?

If just trap again, I vote for used BT99. All the same reasons , not expensive, also he'll look good even if hes not!

Don't know the answer to that. I have only seen a couple BT100's and they all had problems, not to mention they were expensive.

Same as Remington - they made a 90T for a while. I shot one at a demo once 20 years ago maybe now - shot 25/25 with it - nice gun to shoot, ugly as hell, and expensive. They quit making them. I saw one this year with a release trigger. First time I have seen one in a long time.

Nice thing anout BT99 - they last, they are simple to use, they hold their value reasonably well, easy to resell, in fact i cant think of anything I dont like about them

Remington didn't make the 90T Kolar made it for Remington.

Avoid stoeger/condor/stevens like the PLAGUE!!!

Sure it might be cheap and it might even last quite a while. But it will do nothing but discourage you.

They are light, have bad stock dimensions, heavy triggers, whippy barrels.

All this adds up to a gun with freight train recoil and you'll end up with a big ole flinch!

You won't be successful shooting and you will discouraged and you will quit.

Buy a used quality gun, odds are you are will enjoy it more, not to mention you can be proud of the gun you own, rather than feel less than adequate on the trap line.

You can tell me all you want how you don't care what other people think and how your best friend, uncle, cousin, neighboor, Joebobbyjim broke 250x250 at 27 yards with a sawed off cooey with a pistol grip.

You'll still end up on the trap line, missing left and right, looking to your left and right and see brownings, perazzi's, krieghoff & kolars and think to yourself, if I had one of those I'd be ink balling these targets.

A great shooter can shoot well with a s**tty gun, a poor or inexperienced shooter with a s**tty gun will find it much more difficult to improve, than with a gun that fits and functions well.

I like my BT-99, but the fact it is a single shot limits its use to singles and handicap trap. That doesn't matter if a person is going to restrict himself/herself to trap. But a semi-auto, pump or over and under is more versatile. It's not a bad idea to buy a BT-99. But for a first purchase it might be a better idea to purchase something that can be used in a wider variety of venues. One a guy has some experience and a better idea of which game(s) he is most interested in might be a better time to consider the BT-99.

My vote is for a Browning Auto-5, because they are awesome, and can be had for $400ish. But my more serious and more practical second choice would be a Winchester Super X-1. Though not readily available, they can also be had for about $400ish and are absolutely one of the best auto-loading shotguns ever made, period.

An Auto 5 up against an SX-1 lol. :dancingbanana:

Stoeger, Baikal, Stevens and other cheap guns are not meant for high volume shooting. For a casual hunter, a flat of shells may represent a lifetime's worth of shooting. For a serious clay shooter, it represents a slow day at the gun club.

These cheap guns cannot take the abuse of shooting thousands of rounds a year. Whenever sopmeone shows up at the club with one of those, there always seems to be something that goes wrong. I have seen jammed and broken firing pins, broken trigger sears, cracked stocks, etc...

Do yourself a favour and get a quality gun. A used Beretta or Browning will last you a lifetime and you will get most of your money back when you resell it.

Even a used Remington 1100 will serve you better and be more durable. You can get one of the latter on the EE for anywhere from $450 to $650.

It seems that condor is taking a bit of a beating on this thread. Just to give you an idea reliability and quality, I've owned mine for about 2 years and put through on average 500 shots a year through it.
I have nothing against the Stoeger but 500 shots per year breaks down to less than 1 round of trap every two weeks. A registered trap shooter will shoot more than 500 rounds in just two shoots and many shoot over 10,000 rounds per year. Even a recreational trap shooter can easily shoot 2,500 rounds annually.

Where the lower end o/us suffer is in long term durability and the challenges repairing/rebuilding them when they break. I know that Berettas and Brownings will go the distance because I've owned both and shot them extensively.

Also if the shooter decides clay target sports aren't for him it will be much easier to trade/sell a Beretta 391 than a Stoeger Condor. It's the difference in desirability between one of the best semi-autos on the market and the very low end among over/unders.

well the original question was - what to buy for TRAP?

So even though I have a SX-1, and used to have several BT99's, and now have a Browning Cynergy Trap combo & a Browning XT trap, I would still recommend a BT99 as a 1st trap gun (for trap only)

If the question was "what's a good all around 1st shotgun - the answer would be an 870 Wingmaster or a 1100 (or a SX-1 if you could find one...lol, and if you want to buy mine, PM me and we can talk)
