First shotgun: SXP vs 870 SuperMag vs Mossy535/835

Well most of us can't afford to shoot alternatives to steel for waterfowl so yes the 3.5 does have its merits on geese. And Turkey too.

I use steel for geese, but I find 3" works very well, and I see no need to go to 3-1/2". An outfitter friend in Saskatchewan, supplies ammunition for his clients, and he stocks only 3" Fasteel. He wants his hunters to be successful, so if 3-1/2' shells were a big advantage, that is what he would supply.

As far as pump actions go, I prefer the Benelli, or a Wingmaster.

I have an SXP and while it shoots really well for me I wish I'd gone with something else. There is next to no aftermarket parts available for it and what is out there is generally unavailable in Canada.

It's a great gun but it took me a month to find someone who would ship an ATI Akita stock here for me.

That's because it is a gun not a Zombie killer.

I had a 535 and sold it on the EE. Never felt right for me. I bought the Browning BPS, shouldered it at the store and it was like it was custom tailored to me. I don't know that i've had something feel that good on my shoulder. Love that gun.

Got talking to my cousin last night.

He's a muzzle-loader guy but picked up an SXP for country house defense (Re: keep Coyotes from his tiny children) and occasional turkey blasting. He said it was a great gun - but he's not yet used to the pump's auto nature. Warned he's pinched his hand bench shooting (user error by his own admission) and warned of it double-chucking shells while he was trying to finish a cripple.

My vote is for mossberg 500. I have shot a lot of big toms with 3" and it's more than powerful enough. Although I have no experience with geese I think 3" is just fine.especially when you compare the cost of 3" vs 3 1/2".$$
I think the Benelli are overpriced and I personally don't like their fit, but that's a personal choice.
I have shot almost all of my turkey with an 870 wingmaster but the newer 870 express aren't the same gun.
I must say I do like my bps and would reccomended one if you can scrape up the extra cash.
The winchester sxp are fine guns and I think in that case the 3" will take any bird you an shoot at.
1. Mossberg 500
2. Bps
3.sxp

Good luck. Hopefully you can ha dale them all before you buy.

Hey folks - thought I'd give a quick update.

Settled on a used Browning BPS with the beautiful walnut and blued barrel.

Ended up grabbing it from a guy on the equipment exchange here... Has a bit of age on it, but my God, I am in love and got it at a pretty fair price ($500 shipped). My recommendation to anyone... and I've heard it here before, save for what you really want. You'll never regret it and enjoy every time you pull it out of the the case.
