First shotgun: winchester sxp vs mossberg 500

Hi!

I want a field/security combo under 500$.

About the sxp, i'm just not sure about reliability or durability. Is it well made? I handled a sxp field at a shop and it feels good to me. The sxp has a chrome plated barrel and chamber.

The mossberg is blued but has good ergonomics for a lefty. How hard is it to keep the mossberg from rusting (first firearms) in the field? Never handled a mossberg. I know they are tough and reliable.

I have a Mossberg 400G (Canadian made 500) from 1974 that has had thousands of shells down the tube and it is still kicking well. Reliable, cheap, and parts are everywhere. I've moved on to semis now, but the Mossberg will always stay in my safe and used from time to time to keep it honest.
 
Love my SXP, and now there is increasing aftermarket support for things like mag tube extensions, pistol grips, etc. Like my current SXP (and the older 1300 I used to have) much better than the Remington 870's I've owned, but I have no experience with Mossbergs.
 
I prefer the shorter of the two barrels of the Field Combo.. but the additional barrel will come in handy when you shoot other disciplines..
 
The only thing that sucks on the SXP like the older 1300's is the safety position is forward of the trigger not behind it. Only downside other than that they are a far superior gun.
 
I've got a 500, it was my first gun. My family has had 4 mossbergs and 3 of them have had issues. I had to have my trigger reworked, my sister in law had a safety that wouldn't work out of the box, and my brother in law had ejection issues. Not saying they're bad, but I think you get what you pay for. Since then I've bought Tikka, Browining, Beretta, and Ruger guns with no issues.
 
I have a 500 persuader from theammosource... But buddy has the sxp.... Both are great, reliable and eat any and all ammo. I have a preference to american made firearms so I like the mossberg.
For your purposes both will serve you perfectly.
Both have aluminum receivers and resilient Blued finish so they are durable in the field.
Both cost around $350.
 
I will second the "ergonomics for a lefty", it was part of the reason I went with Mossberg 500. The slide release and safety are both in handy, functional locations for either left- or right- side. I have no complaints, it works great. I use mine for grouse and will (hopefully!) get out for turkey with it.

I notice by your recent posts today on various threads that you are new. Not trying to be a smart as_ but looking at your responses here and in the other posts, I think you need to elaborate a bit more on what you are saying so it's easier to get your messages across for others to understand. That way others could respond to your posts if they understood your responses to the topic in the thread. I hope this is helpful and welcome to the forum.
 
I think you will find aftermarket and replacement parts more readily available for the mossberg. Made in the Good old USA. Many law enforcement agencies use the mossberg 500 platform. That should tell you something.
 
I was in a similar position as the OP and decided on the Mossberg Maverick 88. For $500 I was able to get two shotguns from Prarie Gun Traders. I will get them to the range this week to fire them but I like the way the handle so far.

Left - Field model 12 gauge 28" barrel with modified Accu-choke.
Right - Security model 12 gauge 20" barrel 8 shot.

I own a mossberg 500 and being. Left its great and easy to use. Perfect for hunting I find. I held the sxp and LOVED it. But the safty on it put me offals I'm a lefty. If you are not like me buy the sxp its a NICE gun
