First Shotgun

Being new to the shotgun like yourself I've done quite a bit of research on a variety of different shotguns and as everyone's opinions will vary, I would have to say go with the Benelli Nova or SuperNova 12g ... its a very versatile shotgun with lots of kick lol ... be sure to purchase the recoil reducer package or at least a recoil pad for your shoulder if you plan on shooting for a couple hours or else your shoulder will remind you later why you didn't lol ... Good luck!! Have fun and be safe!!! :)

Bass Pro will price match any firearm, ammo etc... so if you see what you like at another store and want to use your Bass Pro money, bring the competitions flyer or show the flyer on your phone and Bass Pro will match the price no questions asked. That goes for anything in the store for that matter, as long as the product isn't on clearance. Hope this helps.

Mavrik 88 if you want something cheap you don't have to worry if you break it. They work well for an out of the box beater gun.

That's good to know they price match on ammo as well

I think the 870 has been dismissed as an option too quickly. I have a 1968, 20ga. Wingmaster and a 2013, 20ga. Youth 870. Both guns have been hunted, both have been soaking wet, both have been snowed-on, both have shot lots of trap with zero issues with shells sticking, or getting jammed in the chamber. Even Winchester white-box grade. My nephew bought the 12ga. Express combo a few years ago and has hunted turkey, deer, and grouse with it and in spite of how badly he neglects this gun, it still functions great. (save for one batch of Winchester target loads, one time) Not saying DO get an 870 of DON'T get one, just seems like the advice is pretty lopsided. As for the 3" vs. 3.5"~I'm 6'1", 300lbs., and not overly recoil shy...but I take no pleasure in shooting 3.5" shells from a pump. Your shoulder eats all that recoil and I'd argue that it isn't needed for the things you say you want to hunt. High-flying geese maybe...?

Well as much as I am no longer a Remington fan I am even less of a Mossberg fan and I had a Benelli Nova, no thanks, never again. Hate to say it but the 870 is at least proven and there is no shortage of parts/service/barrels and accessories for it to meet all your needs.
If that was where my budget was leaning I am afraid that would be the way I would go.
