Hello everyone....I have recently taken my hunter safety & PAL & am looking to get my first shotgun. Any suggestions? After much research I am leaning towards the Winchester Super X3. Does anyone have any input on this gun or recommend anything else. I'm still waiting for the PAL paperwork to go thru so I haven't had a chance to shoulder any guns yet to see what feels good. Just looking for opinions on quality.

Thanks,
Bill

Since I'm a newb....everything to start until I become a gun collecting nut like everyone else...lol

I recommend the Remington 870. It's a versatile gun that rarely fails. I've had mine in some pretty rough conditions hunting ducks and geese and it hasn't failed me.

Go down to the local gun shoppe and hold every single one. Then keep a mental note of the models and then do some internet research about it.

You buy a pair of shoes that you never wore so why do the same for your first "precious" :)

I know I'm kinda working backwards.....excited I guess. At least I'll have an idea of what others have like or disliked once I start picking a few up.

Mac_63...most reviews of the winchester has been positive

+1

As far as semis go, while I don't own one, I have shot many extensively. With appropriate maintenance, the Browning Golds, the Beretta's the SX2s and the 11-87 will all provide excellent service. IMHO, in the longer run you may be upset with replacing O rings on the regular gas handling types. This is why I like the Inertia model of Stoger, Benelli, Franchi fame. A more reliable semi-auto cannot be found. After all my research that will be the one I get.

I guess after all your "research" you failed to notice that the Brownings, Berettas and Winchesters don't have O-rings.

I have used the 1187 and the 870, I bought the 870.

Pump = less parts and quicker cleaning
Semi = more complicated and gets messy and requires cleaning for smooth operation

My Avatar <--- is me with my precious, an 870 pump.

You should take a look at a Benelli semi. Very simple and easier to clean than an 870.

I was originally considering the Benelli or the Beretta, but have decided they are too pricy.

What's everyones thoughts on 3.5" chambers? Is it a good idea or is a 3' plenty? Reason I ask is the Benelli Field M2 (I believe it's called) is in my price range but I think it only comes with a 3" chamber

Also the Beretta Extrema 2 is within my budget too without the kick off option. Is this option worth the extra loot.

Sorry for all the questions, I'm new...lol

No worries. We were all new once.

What do you intend to do with this gun? I've never felt the need for a 3.5" gun and use 3" guns for waterfowl.

In a 3" gun I think the Benelli M2 is the best hunting gun while the Beretta 391 is the best gun for both hunting and clays. But your first choice the Winchester SX3 is also a very good gun and will serve as well as the Benelli and Beretta.

I'm hoping it to be a multi purpose gun for the time being. Eventually I'm sure I'll get a few other guns but for now it needs to do the job for everything. I hope to try my luck at deer, turkey, waterfowl & upland birds. Given my expectations of the gun, I don't mind spending some loot, but there are certainly more cost involved in getting started so I was hoping to get myself a great gun in a reasonable price. My budget is about $1500.

I grabbed a Browning Gold sporting clays from the EE for around $900 as my first shotgun. I haven't had one miss feed, jam, or any sort of issue with it in a years worth of use on the skeet field. Highly recommend anything from the Browning gold line up. I do believe Winchester SX3 is the same gun.. or at least very similar to the brownings. Correct me if I am wrong.

Cheers,

Derek
