My son is 9 and I'm starting to think about what kind if duck/goose/clay gun to get him. While shooting the .22, it seems he is left hand, left eye dominant.

My choices are a LH pump or SA, RH gun and deal with it, Browning BPS, or a double or single.

I'm leaning towards the stoeger combo as it is not expensive and comes with 20g and 12g barrels. I'm thinking this would be a fun first gun and then it would be used by my daughter several years later, then it would be a backup gun, if it lasts that long.

I've also thought about the HR partner. Obviously it's cheap and super simple. Does anyone have experience with these being low low quality?

I'd prefer not to get him a RH pump or semi and I find LH guns are hard to find used.

So what do you guys think.

Thanks

I'm a lefty/left eye dominate shooter. While I did start shooting in my late teens, I did start with a borrowed right handed pump. It worked but at the time the right side ejection bothered me a bit. My first buy was a BPS pump, very nice pump for either left or right hand shooters as they are neutral cast stock, bottom eject amd thumb safety. Also they do have more weight than a single break open that will pound a new shooter in 12 or 20 ga.
There is a reduced length youth model

They are a very well made gun that can be passed down for generations.

The most reccomended gun type I see for young new shooters are 20 ga. Gas operated semi-autos due to reduced felt recoil. I don't know if there are any being manufactured currently but remington used to make them in the 1100 lineup. Might be tough to find on the used market.

Ithaca 37 or Browning BPS would be quality guns that he can keep. If not, Mossberg or Remington. Being lefty shooting righty guns ain't a deal breaker. I am LH and Right Eye dominant, I recently retrained myself to shoot right handed guns, hence now I'm ambidextrous with my firearms.

The BPS is good quality and will equally suit both RH/LH shooters. However, in view of the individual's age the shotgun may be heavy (7lbs) even in a 20ga.

I would say look for a youth model in a small 20 ga, they will fit and function better, and ejection port shouldnt be much of an issue, they are forward enough, or just get a used baikal break action double or single shot.
