Hey guys, I just finished my safety corse and waiting on all the paperwork, which gives me about 3 months to choose.
I'm looking at the remmy 870 sps (link below)
I want a good all around gun I can use for deer, turkey, clays, and most importantly, look awesome!!
I like the pistol grip on this, I'm not soo sure about the factory optics on it, I mean they look good but is it worth it to buy it without them and get my own? Or is this a good factory setup?

I've shot my friends 12g before, not sure the make/model, but man that things got kick, so I'm gonmna need to get some sort of buttstop for dampening on whatever I get.

Any other recomendations for a good beginner gun that I won't want to replace, or do upgrads to right off the bat?(I tent to not be able to leave my cars stock, so I doubt ill be able to resist legal gun mods once I figure some out, I've already been eyein the gold plating for a handgun once I get my restricted, thinkin silver with gold grip)

The 870 is amazing, excellent, and very cost effective shotgun, not matter what the use.

For my first shotgun I picked up one in 20GA (used for hunting grouse mainly, not interested in deer at this time). An addition of a Truglo 'Wing and Clay' sight (cheap, works 100% of the time, also NO batteries), and it's good to go.

If you want one for deer as well, definitely go 12GA.

Any make/model is good. Personally, I went used for mine, since I wouldn't be afraid to get a scratch on the wood or take it out in marginal conditions.

You're gonna fit right in here.

:D

Get something without a pistol grip that would fit you (physically) and your budget. Handle a few different brands/models at the gunshops to obtain a feel of one that would suit you. Depending on gun fit + personal preferences, you may consider the following:

Pump Actions - Rem 870, Browning BPS, Benelli Nova or Super Nova, Mossberg etc.

Oh yeah! most importantly, in order to look awesome - I suggest the use of complete word i.e. "shotgun" :D

+1 to Ahmend's recommendation to try and hold each of the firearms you are interested in. I thought I wanted a Mossberg 12GA, but after holding it, realized that (FOR ME!) it was uncomfortable. If I would have mail-ordered it, I'd be stuck with something I now know I don't want.

One is never enough. I started with a ithaca 37 featherweight. Now I have 15 12ga from 9 different manufactures. I've sold off my 870s and replaced them with mossbergs. The older 870 wingmasters were great guns I find all the newer ones cheap. For aftermarket mods mossbergs are exceptional and they can take a lot of abuse

Yea, it is a Shotgun, not a shotty.

Something that is "shotty" is a piece of ####.

And do not get a pistol grip stock if you plan on wing shooting (clays or hunting).

That pistol grip stock is made for two things and that is turkey hunting and deer hunting as you are shooting at a target most often stationary and not a bird on the wing. Oh and I find pistol grips 100% harder to control recoil on than a regular stock.

870 is a pretty good gun to start out with. They are dependable and there are lots of aftermarket parts out there for them so you will have no issue tracking down different barrels or stocks for it And They are priced well

This is what a "pistol grip" looks like on a Shotgun.

The Shotgun pistol grip has been around a lot longer than the hand gun grip they put on a "shotty" to make it look badass.

Pretty much sums it up

The meat and potatoes of the shotgun world.....
