I bought my first SKS from a CGNer. First off it is a great shooter, I took it to the range and tried it out over the weekend. It was bought for multigun shoots so I intend on using it quite a bit. It came set in a tapco stock and the original wood came with it. The hand guard was was taped to the stock and when I took the tape off it peeled the varnish with it. I decided to refinish the stock as it now looked terrible. I used furniture stripper and was very careful not to damage the stamping or patina. I then finished it with several coats of BLO thinned with turpentine. It looked so good when it was done I decided to take the rifle out of the tapco stock and put it back in the original. Let me know what you think. I now from a collector's point of view the refinish is a bad thing but as a daily shooter I think it looks much better.

The bottom line is if you are happy with the rifle thats all that counts. My advice to you is do not rule out aftermarket stocks. Depending on the style of stock it can enhance your shooting experience as far as ergonomics and accuracy.
