First Spring Bear Hunt 2011

Hi everyone,
A few buddies and I are heading up past Pemberton to do a little scouting/bear hunting coming up here pretty quick. We scoured the area for Mulies during the rut last Nov. and, had we been grizzled hunters, we woulda bagged one. Meaning we walked right onto one bedded with a doe and spooked em both to high hell.
Now, were going up to find prospect cuts for the fall, but will also have a few bear tags with us. This is pretty steep, mountainous terrain with narrow, deep lakes and cuts with power lines running through. Is that where were going to want to focus? Or head up to the snow line? Any tips on helping us with our situation would be greatly appreciated, Cheers.

Oh and where can I find topographical maps?

Binoculars and spotting scope are your friends. Spend lots of time glassing slopes that have had the snow melted off them, and it won't be long until you see some bears.

Spot and stalk is not only very effective, but quite exciting way to hunt Spring bears.

Focus on south facing slopes and whatever altitude has greened up. Roadsides any time of day with grass and dandelions on the edge. They just love fresh dandelions. I'll be north of you in another month. Way too early right now. Best of luck.

Thanks for the replies, i'll take the information up with me. We've been told we may be a little early, so if we run into a bunch of snow it'll be off to Seton Portage to watch the playoffs! Who am I kidding, we'll be doing that anyways. Cheers

Just a little re-cap of the weekend. Went up the McGillvary Pass up to and around the falls, not too deep into the valley and that's where we saw a black bear feeding on the fresh sprouting grass. It was right at about the snow line, he must've just woken up because he was just a little guy, so we let him go. We saw about 10 deer, a whack load of grouse (too bad theyre not in season!) and a yote as well. All in all it was a good trip and we'll be back up there Sept. 1st, and then it'll be business time.
