First Time 22 buyer..

Been looking to buy a fun 22. I was wondering if I could have some input on which brand or model would be best. Would just be used to go to range and spend the day shooting. Price range is from $0-$400. Any input would be greatly helpful.

Everything U need have fun.
 
CZ 452, 453, 455, Lux, Scout.
Old Winchesters.
Old Cooeys.

Levers are fun, but might eat up your budget and then some.

Depending on what you wish to do?

beacuse your unique............just like everyone else.
i am sorry i dont see the attraction to owning somthing that 10 million other people own. not to mention the upgrades avalibal. IMO their are upgrades for the simple fact they need to be upgraded.

go to the shops and handle the rifles. if you cant spot quality in your hands and on the spot chances are it wont matter to you if you have a mossy plinkster or a kimber as long as it goes bang and the bullet hits somthing.
you get what you pay for.
 
The mossy 702 is great...iv never had issues with mine and it outshoots any stock 10/22 iv shot. A good old cooey bolt gun is also a great option
 
I would recommend a Savage Mark II bolt action. They seem to be very accurate and reliable are quite cheap (about $250).

But in the end you may want to just go to a gun shop and try shouldering some and see what you like.

All .22's are fun!

The fun diminishes when you have problems with your gun or ammo. & it doesn't function properly or shoot well. Or you have to spend a lot of $ for upgrades, etc. Unless you like doing that.

For a new out of the box semi auto you can have fun with under $400, you can't beat a Marlin 60 or 795.

some people dont have succes with 10/22, others say it shot perfect out of the box, asking that here is like asking what is the best color.. some will say red, blue, yellow, it never end.

i went for an SR22
 
Since you are new to rimfire (or is it new to ALL shooting?)... go with a bolt action. The Savage MKII FV-SR is a great configuration (best bang for your buck)... But the MKII FV or GV are good also (heavier barrel gives it more heft and accuracy edge and weight is not an issue at the range) mount a decent but inexpensive scope (with AO; Adjustable Objective) and you are all set for some fun and accurate shooting... ours shoot very nicely with CCI SV's (Standard Velocity). If at some point down the road you choose to "dress-up" your rifle, you can purchase a Boyd's stock of your choice and it becomes a very nice unit. Have fun & enjoy it, however I don't believe any of the replies in this thread ever suggested a Remington. :confused:

I have heard over and over again here how many people have had issues with the 597. Maybe your's will be good.
 
I have heard good things about the 597. I know a guy that has one as well. No problems for him in the past few years..

Have fun with your new rifle. Now go shoot it!
 
The 597 is my first and only gun, I was looking for a bolt action but due to selection I couldn't find any, but the shop owner told me in my price range the 597 was dead on. (wasn't keen on a semi-auto but ah well)

I found the only problem was a magazines, at first the stock magazine would not fit all ten rounds, that changed after putting about 50-100 rounds through it

I bought a second magazine, same issue found that opening it up and turning the spring backward solved that problem (no feeding issues after 300 rounds)

The one issue I am having is the "Auto Hold-Open" isn't so auto anymore, it works when it wants to, I'd say about 80% of the time.

I am pretty sure its due to the spring strength of the magazines I am going to look into it further when I have the time..

I am very happy with the 597, shot great right out of the box at 25-50 yards, decided to scope it which even for a newbie was easy for me and its incredible, I have been able to out shoot my friends Savage Mk II consistantly.

^x2 Not that the OP has to take one of the suggestions asked for, but I do find it a bit odd that in a forum where there is a ton of shooting experience with rimfires, nobody suggests a 597 (out of the initial responses) and the OP picks one.

Not that it would have made a difference to the OP, but it sounds like a bolt-action would have been a better choice. Cleaning a semi isn't too tough, but a huge pain in the a** compared to a bolt action. I've never liked 597s, the look...the feel...anything, but that's my opinion. Remington seems to be selling them in spite of my take on them! :)
 
Hmm, do you think maybe there could be more than this site as a source of information? Or maybe friends, family. Who knows, but to think he HAS to choose one that is suggested here?? Seriously?
