Hello:

First time ammo buyer (and gunowner) here in Ontario. R-PAL (Ontario) issued on November 6, 2022; waiting on physical license to arrive in the mail.

I am looking to purchase some 22LR ammunition for a Ruger 10/22 Takedown Heavy Barrel. I have been to Ammobin.ca and most vendors listed there are out of stock.

Are there any other suggestions for me to locate ammo? Recommendations are also welcome. I realize that there is a general shortage in ammunition (and other staples) in general.

Thanks in advance,

GL

Yes! The site sponsors on CGN are a great source of ammo, my favourites are Tenda and G4C but many others list and I have bought from at least a half dozen others like SFRC, Arms East, Bullseye North, and others that came and ceased to exist :)

Just a tip, I would stay away from Winchester 22LR if I were you, but that's just because of my personal experience with it. CCI, Federal, and Remington are my favourites for bulk.

Good luck out there!

buy 50rds of every brand you can find and test em out if you are after accuracy. CCI is the "standard" for quality/price. I liked Winchester bulk but also dont shoot semi-auto. Subsonic rounds may not cycle your action properly.

Can't go wrong with the CCI either standard or HV.
Stick with the 40 grain stuff...that seems to be the sweet spot for 22lr.

Lots of Canadian Tires have Federal automatch. Works great in most semi autos. 22 lr is very common. Walk into any gun store and ask, try it

Also, ammobin no bueno. Use arsenalforce if you want an aggregate web search.

Thanks for the tips! Arsenalforce works petty good!

Bought a lot of bulk from bulleseye a few months back, mostly CCI Stinger and Mini Mag but they are sold out now. It comes in waves. Remember with a semi you need around 1,100 ft/s and up.

My 10/22 shoots CCI Standard Velocity very well. When it stops ejecting it needs cleaning. I bought a lighter recoil spring from Dlask for cold weather shooting. I would recommend buying by the case of 5000 if at all possible. It will never drop in value, and may become unavailable in the future.

Thanks for the info. I won't be shooting any subsonic rounds then.

I will definitely go that route once I find out what kind of ammo the 10/22 likes eating. Probably CCI of some sort.

You'll likely be saddled with what ever is on the shelf of the store .
10/22 will digest about any long rifle fodder you feed it.
You likely will not need RWS Target ammo , so save your money there.

Local BassPro has Fed Automatch for ca $45/box/325. I found it does well in my Sav 64 & A22 (semis), but at ca 0.16/round it's pricey for the quality. CCI-SV runs about the same AND is MORE ACCURATE in Most guns I've found. emerson has a point about cleaning, and make sure your chamber is especially clean, spin a brush with Boretech C4 in there with a drill for a few seconds to get out ALL the Carbon.

OP, congrats on your new license.

Some fantastic advice here...I have nothing really substantive to add except maybe some additional comments for colour...

1. Agree about CCI Standard Velocity. This has fairly universal positive comments. Runs well in both semi auto and bolt actions. Bricks of it are on sale now and then at various retailers.

2. Federal Automatch 325 pack. Tenda had a really good sale on this a couple of weeks back...$30.99 a box of 325. I think G4C currently has a sale on it for $39.99. Normally it runs about $47-$50 a bulk pack. https://g4cgunstore.com/product/federal-champion-training-22lr-40gr-lrn-325rds/. This is really just plinking ammo and optimized for semi-autos. If pressed, I would still go with CCI SV if you get a deal on it.

3. Agree with checking various site sponsors. FOC had a deal on Blazer .22LR bricks of 500 for $49.99 only a few months ago. These things pop up on sale at various retailers now and again - just have your search saved and bookmarked and periodically check it - or get on the retailer's mailing list.

4. Agree with EE deals. I have found some absolutely fabulous deals through the EE with people selling bricks. Patience and regular checking is the key here.

5. Midrange stuff like RWS and SK - try that only after getting used to your gun and seeing what it likes. Just because it's higher price doesn't necessarily mean it will run well in your gun.

6. CCI Mini Mags are fantastic in semi autos.

7. For hard hitting rounds, if you can find CCI Stingers those are good for hunting applications, but accuracy is sacrificed for velocity/power.

8. Some barebones "value" entry level stuff like Remington Golden Bullets, Remington Thunder Bolts, etc. - I'd be wary. It may be cheaper, but for a few bucks more CCI SV is a better long term value proposition.

9. Yes, many subsonic rounds like Remington CBee, CCI Quiet, Aguila Super Colibri, etc. won't cycle in a semi-auto.

10. Agree with many posters - Tenda is generally decent for .22, but lots of stuff sold out. I do think around this time of year, Bass Pro/Cabela's has decent details approaching Black Friday. Last year, I got boxes of 525 Golden Bullets for $34.99. It remains to be seen what is available and how cheap it is, but this as good of a time to scour the sites of our site sponsors, as any.
