Well I'm not a "red rifle" owner, however a colleague at work has purchased one and asked me what and how to clean of the cosmoline and stain the stock. So I figured I'd go to the "experts" here.Pls keep it short and simple troops. I looked for the "sticky" quickly but came up blank?? Thanks
First Time Cleaning Off the Cosmoline on a SKS

pre heat oven to 170 deg F.
wrap stock in old towel
turn off oven
stick stock in oven
clean rest of parts
take out of oven
stock is now pretty much cosmo free(does it ever all come out)
Cosmo melts @ 160 deg, get it flowing and the terry sucks it out.

Knuckles; you have an understanding wife and probably a great smelling kitchen! 
I put the metal parts into paint thinner. It all came off easily. For the woody parts -- the stock and the gas tube cover, I used a heat gun. and paper towels. My oven wasn't big enough to hold the stock. Heat up the wood and bleed as much as I could out of the wood. When you heat it up don't let the cosmoline "boil" on the surface of the wood, just make it hot enough to sweat the stuff out.
put all metal parts in a big tote. pour boiling water on them until they are covered swish parts around in boiling water. drain water and repeat until parts are clean. dish detergent helps as well. pour boiling water down the barrel and gas tube until clean. oil all metal parts and run a bore snake with a bit of oil through the barrel. just wipe the furniture down as best you can with a rag or you could use a steamer but not too much steam on the wood or you will ruin the finish.
