A buddy and I are thinking of going out to find a few grouse when the season opens. I have never hunted them before and the expeditions are low.

I have a single shot .410 and a few hours on the week ends.
Any advise for a complete newbie?

I've always had luck spotting them on the side of the service roads eating the gravel. As long as you have a keen eye, you shouldn't have any issues. I've been shooting my .410 for 27 years, and it's a great fowl gun. Alternately, a rim fire works as it leaves less of a mess compared to shotguns.

Speaking of different hunting methods, I met an old native fellow many years ago who would hunt grouse with nothing more than a stick and some shiny tinfoil mounted on another stick. He would get their attention with the tinfoil, and then whack them with the stick hidden in the other hand. Safe to say, grouse aren't the smartest prey. Good tasting though.

As the others said, trails, gravel roads is where I have always had the best luck. They eat the gravel and the finer the grit the better they like it. .410 will work just fine,I use my 12 ga and it has a really tight full choke, most of the time I can get them with only putting 1-2 pellets in the breast.
