First time I've run into this....shimming a scope base?

Possible super easy solution to this one....'98 rear base #45 instead of the '96 #55. It's a bit higher, same spacing, same contour.... Have to try it out this weekend.
That was the local smiths (Jason Spencer) solution so I gotta give him props. I asked about shimming and he said he would rather make a base from scratch before shimming a base....lol

Sounds like a perfect solution ... I would still alternate mounting the front and rear ring/base set (with scope) to the action to see if either sits higher and any gap appears. Taking up even small gaps will place stress on the scope tube when the bases are screwed down. And the stress may effect repeatability of your shot placement. Some folks might use a lapping bar but Im not a fan of lapping ring sets

I had the same problem with nicely sported 96 mauser. In the process of sporting, the rear charger hump was ground off. This caused some loss of metal on the rear receiver bridge radius. I happened to have some brass shim stock, ended up putting a 10 thou shim under the base to get things sorted out. Hitzy - please let us know what the incremental height difference is between the 98 and the 96 rear bases is.

Height difference between rear bases is pretty darn close to exactly 2mm....might be a bit too much...won't know until I can shoot it this weekend, but at least I can lower this one easily.

Worked like a charm, I'm now about 30 clics from full down with 140gr PRVI....lots of elevation left in her now. And another sweet deal with this ugly dog, it shoots factory PRVI like a champ with the M38 stepped mil barrel...all my other 6.5's hated it. Finally one hunting rifle I don't need to load for lol
