First time loading 30-30 question.

Its a RCBS die. Since its my first time i might not have it set properly but my finished length is dead on where it should be.
I was expecting a factory type crimp so if its a taper i might have missed it.
Would i be able to measure the case and see it the crimp shows.

Thanks for all the good info so far!

I prefer to use a separate crimp die with my tube feeds.
Easier to use and you don't need to be so precise on case length.
Less chance of bulging the brass under the neck area.

Me too. For a 30-30, case length is not too important (to me), so I usually crimp separately. I use a Lee crimp die. But then, I am not shooting in the 1000 meter Olympic event. Mostly laundry jug full of water or paper target defense. :p

I have a neat old Savage Model 219/220 30-30/12ga that I am going to give a little workout today, in fact. 10 gr. of 700X under a 150 Lee FN WW, new brass, no crimp.

My tip for 30-30 since i am pretty sure that crimping has been covered is>>>>>

Dont try to make it something it is not. The case has a limited capacity, no matter how much powder you stuff or compressed the load, it is still a 30-30. Find a accurate load for your rifle, be that near max or several grains less. Many calibers benefit from increased performance and cost savings through loading, 30-30 really does not or very limited. Cheap ammo at Walmart,...... a lot of time invested, components to buy, and it still is a 30-30. YMMV.

You make a very good point. Im not looking for performance just cost savings for my son to be able to blast away without breaking the bank. I really should look at the cheapest stuff i can buy vs setting up to reload.

I don't crimp the 30-30, I believe that it is the spring pressure+recoil that cause bullets to move, so I just load 5 in the magazine, then of course there are never more than 4 shells in the magazine during recoil. This has never caused a problem for me, YMMV.

One thing to consider with the 30-30 for you folks looking to save money, don't buy jacketed bullets. You can fire the gas checked lead RN ones instead, and they cost about half as much if you buy them, and significantly less if you make them (I don't).

The 30-30 isn't a particularly fast firing round, so you don't even really need those copper jackets. I believe someone above said they want cheap blasting rounds for their kids, you can make SUPER cheap ammo if you use small amounts of pistol powder with lead bullets. There's very little recoil as well. If I had kids I'd be using this setup.

That's what most of my reloads are. With the cast bullet bought it comes around 32 cents a round. If I was making the bullet it would probably be around 20 cents.

Got everything sorted and working now thanks to a pdf manual!
The bullet seat was set to low not allowing the case to be crimped before reaching my desired length. 2.545"

I was looking at some vids of guys using 10gr of Unique for target loads. Sure beats 32gr of 4064!

Thanks for all the help everyone!!!

I have been hand-loading for 35 years, most for bolt action rifles with the exception of 375 Winchester i once owned. The roll crimp worked well for that.
I just started reloading 30-30 this summer. My question for you guys, is what kind of case life can I expect with hunting loads in the 30-30, M94?
The 375 is a straight case and i was on about the fourth loading of the cases I had when I sold the rifle, (Still kicking myself) will the bottle-necked case life be shorter than four loads?
