Hey guys,

A thread below got me wondering so instead of high jacking his thread I figured if make my own.

Just picked up the m305s, bought it new from local gun shop.. haven't done anything but clean the cosmoline off.

Now the gas vent looks just to say (hard to even notice) off 6 o'clock.. What now? Does it need to be fixed? Should I contact the gun shop? Can it be left alone and never haunt me again?

She seemed to pass ever other test.. Although the front sight and flash hider are canted, how do I adjust this?

Thanks!!

Luke

If the barrel grooves for the flash hider are aligned properly you could replace it with a USGI one with a properly centred sight base, I think there are a few for sale in the EE right now.

Which way is the gas vent off? Will your front site need to be pushed all the way in the opposite direction? These two issues are commonly linked to the same cause. Poor barrel indexing, which can also cause your op rod to bind up. If you dont have a barrel vice and action wrench, a smith will have to align everything for you.

If the front sight base is milled flat and not made at an angle it sounds like your barrel indexing may be off .
To fix that you require a barrel vice . If you are looking at the front sight from the rear of the rifle and it is leaning to the right the barrel may be under indexed ( not tightened on enough). If the sight is leaning to the left the barrel may be over indexed ( tightened on too much). If you plan on putting on a scope it isnt a big issue but if you are going to be using the iron sights it needs to be corrected.

If you really need it fixed get the rifle to me and I will sort it out for you .....I live a couple hours drive from Northbay.

If the barrel is under indexed and needs some more tightening, what is done about the barrel set screw? There is a dimple in the barrel threads that won't line up with the screw any more. Is it not needed then?

The set screw is superfluous. It is not even in the original m14/m1a design. It does need to be backed out to adjust the barrel without damaging the threads.

As Chalkriver says...unless you are going to be using the iron sights, over/under indexing is not an issue (unless it is extreme i.e. 180 degrees). Mine is slightly over indexed but I use a scope.

Over 2,000 rounds later, no issues and she shoots great.
