Awaiting the arrival of my M44 and have located some 7.62 x54R. What do you suggest for first time fun plinking, the 148 gr. ball or the 174 gr.?
Is there much difference in recoil?
Thanks.

The Hungarian heavy ball is actually a 184g bullet and I chronyd it at 2675fps. It kicks like hell.........but doesn't gum up the aaction.
The Czech laquered 148g ball was accurate, had less recoil but the laquer really made the bolt hard to open....really hard.
If you can find it, I'd go with the copper washed hungarian 148g ball.....should be the best of both worlds.

yup, Pretty much what I was going to type.

You almost have to bring a blunt object to open it sometimes with that Czech stuff. If its the same stuff Im thinking of Then Its also Dirty as hell.. Takes 10x longer to clean it.. Such a PITA.

If you get the chance, shoot your M44 at twilight or in the dark. The fireball is truly outstanding! It's enough to take your mind off the beating the rifle is giving you. ;)

Take you M44 with a round of the Hungarian heavy ball (184g) and shoot it in the dark at a steel target...you'll only do it once but it'll be worth it ;) . If the kickback isn't enough, the flash or the nice sparks off the steel target should impress you.

Oh crap, now I'm gonna be flinching like crazy the first time. Thanks for scaring me !!
Please tell me it can't be any worse than shooting 12 G. slugs with my Maverick 88 ? Please ?

oh its worse...especially if you have a carbine...I LIKE recoil, but crap, i was almost crying by the time I got through the last session with the M44...ask happydude. and that's one of the many reasons why I love my mosins! just hold er tight, it'll be OK

Yes, it kicks pretty hard but as Ollie said that's half the fun sometimes. When I first got my full length mosin I put a recoil pad on it just to get used to it so I wouldn't develop a flinch, you might want to do the same. They're fun little rifles, you'll enjoy it.

Am I the only one who thinks a shotgun kicks worse? As far as I'm concerned, a 12-guage or even a little 20-guage with slugs is much worse.

My brother and I both have carbines his is WWII mine is Korea war vintage we blow surplus ammo thru it al the time good fun, and better yet the ammo cheap.
We blow off a couple of rounds then go in and watch Enemy at the Gates kind of acts like a mood setter.

recoil is not nearly as bad as you might think.I have M44 as well and i find it far more acceptable than M48 mauser shooting turk ammo.it is so good that i have tried pounding at 100m 12X12 steel plate standing .with some practice im getting all shots in .for some reason my M44 doesnt mind czech laquered stuff so this is great fun :)
btw-sling use is kind of mandatory when traing this LOL

The M44 kicks hard, no doubt about it. Perceived recoil depends on how you're shooting IMO.

At our last Milsurp shoot the event was timed with movement between firing positions. When I was shooting my M44, I hardly noticed the recoil. I was preoccupied with reloading, sighting and shooting.
I find the recoil far more noticeable when shooting deliberately, less so during rapid fire.

That said, I enjoy shooting my M38 and M44 more than most of my other rifles.

BTW, I feel my FR8 kicks harder than my Mosin carbines.;)

My polish M44 kicks pretty good.....but i still find for me anyway,
the No5 worse;)....sorry i know this is a Mosin thread.

I agree the m44 has a kick but not the same as my slug gun. The difference in felt recoil by many people could have something to do with the length of pull on the M44 buttstock. Enfeild stocks come in different lengths, do mosin stocks?? Mine was to short for me, and I built a leather lace on extension that seemed to help.
