First time out with Accubonds...

Well I finally tried some Nosler Accubonds...and am impressed!
Here are the loads:

1. Mauser 96 (1996 straight pull bolt), 24" light contour barrel
.300 Win Mag, 180gr Accubond, 77.5gr RL22, WW brass, GM215M primers and 3.400" OAL. - 0.389" group at 100 yards

2. Steyr-Mannlicher S Luxus, 25.6" barrel
7mm RM, 160 Accubond, WW brass, GM215M primers, 66.0gr IMR 7828 and 3.350" OAL - 0.829" group at 100 yards.

I also tried IMR4350 (for the first time) in the 7mm and it gave a .530" group at 100 with 140gr Partitions. Not too shabby either.

I am certain I can get the 7mm down under .5" with the Accubonds, as this was just the first try.
My friend and I are taking these rifles out on a deer hunt this weekend, perhaps I can chime in with a report on game as well!


Note: These loads were safe in my rifle but please work up to them in yours as they may be too hot.

I like them gonna wait for the 6.5 Accubond to be released. Hoping for a 120 gr.


Still waiting to get my hands on some 110 gr. AB's for my 25-284.


I shot a bear with the 160 AB out of my 7saum in 2003, real awesome performance would be an understatement.
 
Jeebus those are impressive groups 99... 7mm 160 grain accubond should be devastating on deer 8)
Try Retumbo Powder in your 7mmRemMag... you should be able to get safe compressed loads with 160 grain bullets. You will notice a reduction in recoil and you should get Sub MOA groups as well :wink:
 
Please keep the AB positive reports coming!
I'm new to reloading, and decided to use AB's for my 300WM hunting load. Accuracy is good but some people have been badmouthing their structural integrity.
Too late for me to switch to NP's now. I just have to wait and (hopefully) see for myself how they perform on game.

Have you tried RETUMBO? I've heard some good reports of it in .300WM. I used to use H870 in my 7mm RM, dirty but effective.
 
Theres a thread on Accuratereloading.com thats kind of interesting in regards to Accubonds. Tips coming off in the magazine and poor weight retention. Accurate though( when the tips still on). :mrgreen:

This is true, but now a T3 will do the same or better at a much more reasonable cost. Those Tikka's sure are something.

Now why did you have to go do that? Anyone have first hand experience with this "problem"?

Yes I have found the same with my Tikka 7mm mag. I used 62 grains on the nose and I chron'yed the load at an ave of 3063 fps. You can check out my group in the "best group" thread. They appear to great killing paper, I am going to try and get a moose mid Oct, so I will report on their field performance then.

Well, boys, I have tried 160 ABs in two different 7mm Rem Mags and a 7X57 rifle and cannot get them to shoot worth a hoot in any of them.:?

All three rifles shoot very well with other bullets.

That sucks.

It was the first bullet I loaded with hunting in mind for my 270WSM. They were accurate but I wanted more velocity. They opened up when I achieved the velocity so I went to the 130 gr. Interbond. Since I've seen several write ups on them retaining more weight % and a guy on AR coming up with the same results, I thought it would be my answer. I had accuracy but it was inconsistent. Good group bad group with several powders. I returned to my loads with the Accubond and have settled right there. In the end I think I was expecting too much out of my 270WSM.
 
I think its a excellent bullet even if it retains less weight than the Ibond. As far as whats being said on AR, its too early to judge by what seems like a bad batch. If I start hearing more of this talk of tips breaking off, I'll stop trusting them until Nosler says the problems fixed. I don't want to jam in a shell not knowing if the tip is still on after the first shot. I'd hate to miss twice! :mrgreen:
 
I have loaded about 700 rounds of .270, about 300 rounds of .308 and 200 7mm Accubonds... never had a tip come off and they all shot accurately. Probably was a bad run or a mechanical problem with a certain rifle. :?
As far as them not shooting well in certain 7mms there also has to be a reason for that, maybe the same bad batch of bullets were involved :|

I finded anicdotal butllet performance is a twitchy sort of thin you have to pull the high and the low mark. The guy on AR has beat that dead horse on a couple of boards which gives a false sence of an issue. You can go to any board and find a guy saying that brand "x" is crap and have pictures. But one guys experience is not statisticaly significant.

Now there was probaly way too much hype with the bullet, the talk that it penetrates like a partition and expands like a BT, is crap. expansion and penetration are esentially mutually exclusive. Only time will tell, one or two more hunting seasons and the picture will be clear.

I think experince and the testing is showing it is a soft controled expansion bullet, basically a bt that you can drive above 2900 fps without it becomming a varmint bullet.
