First time reloading alone

So I have developed loads with a buddy. So I learned doing it with him. Now I have all my gear and was doing some work tonight on my own. I sized all my new brass. And have begun putting in primers.

First problem. I had one primer go in upside down, it flipped in the press some how. Now what? Is there a safe way to remove this primer? Do I dispose of it? How safely?

While I was doing this my new sonic hornady cleaner was cleaning some brass. I set it for 30 minutes. I took brass out. A lot of it still seems pretty dirty. How clean should it come out? Should I be required to hand clean each one after? Did I maybe put too many into the cleaner?

As for the primer, you can just remove it as you would a spent primer. Just don't slam the press down. Unless the primer is struck it should not go off.
Some people feel more comfortable deactivating the primer with oil or something else and that is fine too.
I have removed inverted primers and no issues.

As for the cleaner, I use SS pins so I cannot comment on that

^^^ This but wear safety glasses. There's no need to waste a perfectly good primer. Keep on loading and you'll eventually pop primers, install them sideways, deform them etc.

A test showed that even when soaked in water or oil, it is not a guaranteed method of deactivating a primer. Some are still "alive" after such soakings.
 
x3 for just running it back threw the die, despite what people say, primers are much harder to set off then you think. you'd have to try pretty damn hard to get one to pop in a single stage press

as Trinimon said you'll eventually pop primers, install them sideways, deform or straight up crush them.. so dont feel to bad this happened haha

^^^^ This good advice do it once and your nervousness will drop, it's normal to feel that way at first. I would highly suggest cleaning with SS pins though..
 
I've actually bought a Lee universal decapping die. I prefer it as the decapping pin is solid unlike the wee ones from RCBS. I have had zero issues with popping out primers and reusing them. Safety glasses is a must but other than that, as others have said, the primers are tougher than you think.

Are you using This?

This case has no debris left on it from Ultrasonic cleaning, but still shows the tarnish and corrosion of being a piece of long term range brass.

Ultrasonic cleaners get cases physically clean from debris, but do not give a polish.
The reason? Ultrasonics do not remove staining, just particulate.

So your brass is likely clean and 100% good to load, but does it look new and polished?
Some people put in a pinch liquid polishing solution to their Ultra Sonic Cleaner to give a better appearance, but the best polishing is still done with a physical method of abrasion (either dry tumbling meedia, or wet SS pins).

Are some "much cleaner" than others? Brass closest to the absolute center of the ultra sonic cleaner tank will be the cleanest, with brass closest to the edges being the worst.
Yes you may have put too many in, your solution may not be optimum.
 
I have heard of people that use sonic cleaners putting in a bit of lemi-shine to help out. I'm not sure what size your sonic cleaner is, but I would not use more than about half a 9mm case of lemi.
If you use too much lemi-shine, it will leach zinc from the brass and you will have pink(ish) brass.
 
The picture you sent isn't quite as bad it is. My main portion of brass is nice and shiny. The necks are still black on some from the powder burn. I took a few and was able to wipe it off. So that can't be clean if I can still simply wipe. I'm gonna run them again with half the load so they can move around inside.
 
Oh and I got the primer out. And to be honest as much as you all said it would be fine, I didn't trust any of you and did it with my head turned away and very cautiously lol. I survived, I didn't need bomb squad, and the fire department didn't need to come lol

Before I got into guns and reloading I found a 3030 cartridge and wanted to see the gun powder to play with fire of course. So I suited up in winter coats, gloves, hearing and full face protection. I put the bullet in a vice and got it apart without blowing up. Needless to say I realize how safe they really are when not in a chamber.

Great video. Wow I really didn't know it was that weak. See my pyro childhood story is a little different. We took a 22lr bullet that we were "going to open up and use the powder to burn". So we thought we could use a hammer to sort of bend the casing giving us the space to pull bullet out and then our prize the powder. Well no one explained the difference between centre fire and rim fire when I was 6 lol so apparently taping the side of the case with a hammer on a rim fire isn't a good idea. So of course it went bang and my ears were ringing for a week. Of course I didn't tell my dad as then my ass would be hurting too lol all my life I just assumed the bullet flew at 2000fps in a direction that didn't kill me, little did I know it probably hit me but without any force.
