First time shooting 500 yard

Hi all,

I normally shoot 200 yard due to the limitation of local range. Last week I got a chance to shoot 500 yard in Base Bordan.

Here is my results:

The rifle I used is a Stevens based 6mmBR, which does really well at 200 yard.

It was windy and hot (mirage!).

Is it normal the group opens up like that in 500 yard?
 
Rifle is a Stevens with Shilen SS Select match barrel.

Ammo is 6mmBR Laupa case + 105 gr A-Max + 40.3 gr Varget + CCI BR4.

First time seeing the jumping mirage.

I am happy with the result - it's my first time after all. Just wondering what should I do next?
 
Well, seeing as how it can shoot like that at 200, I would suggest working on your technique or your setup. Are you using a front and rear rest of some sort?
 
Base Bordan doesn't have bench rest tables so I have to bring my own portable table. That's one thing doesn't work well for me....
 
You can't go prone? Shooting off of a wobbly table is as good as throwing your bullets at the target IMO. A 6BR is an accurate cartridge and your 200yd group looks good, if it's repeatable, no reason why it can't shoot better at 500. It's good your happy with the results, but, just think how happy you'll be when that group is half the size or less.

Do you mean 30.3gr of Varget? 40.3 sounds like a lot.
 
It's hard to tell what your 500 yard group size is. Is it about 5" wide by about 7" high?

Your 200 yard group tells me that you, your rifle, your ammo, and your scope shoot well.

How happy, or unhappy, were you with the shots you were breaking at Borden from your portable bench?

I would suggest shooting prone off the grass. Use a bipod or a BR rest for the front, use a bag at the rear. It takes extra time to properly set up on a sloped grass mound (in comparison to a uniform flat shooting bench top). Take the time to get things set up comfortably. See how the other F-Class shooters do it, get advice from them.

Since you'll probably be able to shoot 200y sooner than the next time you can get to Borden, can you shoot prone off the ground at your home club? Figure out what you need to do to shoot sub-one-inch groups at 200y from prone.

Do you have a collimator, or can you otherwise confirm that your scope still has additional "up" adjustment beyond the setting you used at 500 yards? (I don't mean that the scope knobs still move, I mean that the reticle still moves)
 
On your 200 yard target, are they 1 or 2 " squares??

Going off that they look like 2" on my phone, I'd say you need to drop just a hair off you powder charge. For 200 yards it appears you have almost 1" of vertical spread, which is a fair bit, which would account for such the large virtical spread at 500.

That being said, if they are 1" then is have to contribute it to the wind and mirage. I your unsure of how to read it,it can really screw with you. Try going out on a calm and cool morning
