First time shooting handguns today

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. Choosing the guns to buy is going to be tough so I hope to at least hold a few more if I'm not able to shoot them. There are a couple of big box stores nearby and two smaller gun shops around including Wolverine. After reading dozens of threads and reviews I've come to the conclusion that most of the guns like CZ, Sig , Smith & Wesson, Glock are all good guns. I find the Glock to be a homely pistol but if I picked it up, and easily shot a nice group, it would be my favorite gun. I guess triggers and sights can be changed too if you like the feel of the gun in the hand but you need to improve the other things. There is a gun show at the end of the month I plan to attend as well.
I've been shooting for close to five years starting with zero experience. The benefits of shooting with other like minded people are numerous . I always maintain that shooters in organised clubs are one of the best fraternal groups I have found. If I were confined to shooting by myself at static targets my interest would have dissolved in relatively short order. My preference is in the action sports where I shoot in IPSC, IDPA, Steel Challenge and a mess of tactical games where I am now in south east Texas. I shoot about a match a week with today being a tactical pistol event. I've done a lot of things in my 69 years but none of them has made me more friends than the shootings sports. Get yourself comfortable and then start recruiting. The gentler ### is a huge market and one that needs more exposure to the quality of what I call "gun people". If we make more inroads with the ladies, we will get more youngsters an d increase our chances to offset the unfair and unreasonable negativity we get all too often. I feel safer overall taking my grandsons shooting than I do going to a bowling alley or golf course. Welcome to the games !!!
I shot for the first time in a very long time when a friend invited me yesterday and also shot 22, 9mm, and 45. For a minute I thought I was the OP! Anyone have any suggestions on how to tell the wife about your new hobby?
Try having a pistol or two and a shotgun delivered to the house. Follow that up with a nice AR-15. That will get the discussion moving nicely.

If you can pull it off, try to take your wife first. Pick a night when one of the more social leagues are shooting if there is such a thing at your club. As with many visitors, the noise can be a negative factor so make sure she has good protection. There's a good chance she will see other women shooting and a group of well-behaved men. To me, the discipline and courtesy usually seen at the ranges are good things. Women are also mothers and need to see that their kids will be going to a safe, polite and decent environment. That's what we have to deliver. I've found that if you can get a visitor to shoot something comfortable, they often are pleasantly surprised and then sold. Good luck!
I had to do the same thing recently. I got in to it the same way you did, friend took me to the range one day and I instantly knew I had to make this a regular occurence. My wife isn't a huge fan of guns but luckily shes not deadset against them. When I told her I made sure to itterate that shooting at a range is a very controlled environment with a huge emphasis on safety and that for the most part everyone is helpful and professional. She took it better than I thought and only said I had to get a safe to put my firearms in when I get them to make sure there is no chance of anyone getting to it who doesn't know how to proerly handle it. Done deal! Now currently awaiting my RPAL to come in and have my first pistol on reserve!
Best advice I can give is to give her as much info about it as possible, and if you can get her out to the range with you thats great! (I haven't been able to...yet...)
