First time shooting slugs

Is there much difference in recoil between 1 oz and 1 1/4 oz slugs?

When people hold the shotgun 'tight' to your shoulder ....are you pulling back mostly with the right (ie trigger) hand or left hand ?

Any other techniques for managing recoil?

How do you stop from getting slapped in the face by the stock ?

Thanks

thats an easy one, just use the pistol grip & hang on tight:rolleyes:

Yesterday morning we burned through 400 shells out of 3 different guns mostly shooting at clays. A synthetic rem 11-87, a synthetic 18.5" maveric 88and a cooey 84 (old light single shot). Recoil with the reminton was a gentle push, the maveric kicked a little because it was so light but the cooey was horrible. It was the perfect training tool for using very few shells to get what you need to get done. My girlfriend shot the other two but I didn't want her to shoot the cooey. A slug out of that gun would have been painful...

i think gun fit and stock design has a lot to do with it. i can shoot dozens of 3" slugs and buckshot out of my Benelli Nova comfortably.
those same 3" slugs out of my Savage 24F - despite being a heavy gun - were absolutely brutal. i quit after the second one.

Some police training groups limit 12 slugs a day . Ever get a headache after shooting a batch of slugs ? -Thats caused by the brain bouncing in the skull.
Extra heavy recoil has also been known to dislocate the retina - so hold those shotties TIGHT to your shoulders ! :shotgun: :runaway:

Was doing a bit of target practice last fall; 870 with a 20" rifled sabot slug barrel, wearing a T-shirt. Stopped after fifteen rounds; I was getting a little punchy. And my shoulder was tender for a day or so afterwards. No detached retinas, though.

The recoil from sabots makes regular slugs feel almost pleasant. OTOH, when I started shooting my first .308, it felt like a pussycat in comparison. :shotgun:

I friggin LOVE shooting slugs!! My Mossy 195 does jack s**t for cutting recoil down! Well the vented barrel does a bit but damn I love it.

It "WAS" a Dell Optiplex GX260. It resides beside my TV so I can admire it whenever I want.

Also to add, shooting slugs BLEW off the parts of the barrel that the choke consist of. So it's now my smooth bore sluggin ####stick! :D

I pulled a similar prank on a buddy of mine the last time we went out shooting. The first 5 rounds were regular birdshot loads after those were gone, the next 5 shells I handed him were slugs (unknown to him). The first round shoved him back pretty good and he gave me a "wtf ???" kind of look, I just shrugged and told him "slugs" ... He proceeded to fire the next 4 rounds but forgot to count and pulled the trigger on an empty chamber for #6, holy flinch Batman ! I have it on video, we all had a good laugh at his expense when we watched the video at home ... That flinch shouldn't be very hard to fix, as he realized that it didn't really "hurt", it's just not what he's used to.

Did the same thing to my brother in-law (thinks he tough and wouldn't lisen when I was talking about the recoil), except when it was his turn with my Mossberg I put 2 - 2.75" bird shots and a 3" rifle slug. The third shot shut him up.

man i love slugs. it's probably one of my favourite things to shoot. i remember the first time i fired one, i felt almost drunk. a few more later and i had a spider web of bruises on my shoulder. i don't even feel them anymore however. i can lob pop flys (flies?) at about 100 yards with a bead sight now and hit the target. they're not exactly bullseyes but it's pretty satisfying just the same.

Grove...I may have one-upped you! :) Check out h ttp://www.flickr.com/photos/bdt/sets/72157606558464007/

My first time with slugs was low-recoil, simply because that's what the store had in stock. But even the regular recoil doesn't bug me. That is to say, I feel the recoil but I don't have any..."side effects." I took some people from work out shooting, and one of the girls told me the next day that both arms were sore.

Last time I went out, I had some new guys with me. They were all considerably beefier than me, but they didn't really want to do the shotgun more than once as it "hurt too much!"

one handing 3" slugs with my 12" grizz w/ pistol grip kinda hurt my wrist. I still dont think that even 3" magnum slugs kicked all that much, especially with a full stock. I just popped off 50 - 2 3/4" #5 shot and 25 - 3" slugs & buckshot. I didnt find it bad at all.
