First time shooting trap... am now hooked!

just tried it for the first time today, shot a round of singles skeet and a round of trap, already lining up a 12 gauge o/u, but man does my shoulder hurt and had a good start to a head ache going on lol. is there anyway to mitigate some recoil on the 12? i know my shoulder position was a bit off but got it where it should be by the end of shooting.
Shooting stance, gun hold, foot position, gun fit, gun weight, stock configuration, shell velocity and shot weight all contribute to felt recoil. Without actually watching you shoot anyone who offers advice reducing is simply guessing without adequate information.

If there is a shooting instructor around your club talk to him and get a lesson or two. If not an experienced shotgunner should be able to offer some suggestions on what you can do to lessen the recoil.

perhaps the gun does not fit you. I got headaches every time with my old Remington 870 and then I switched to the Browning BPS and problem solved!

Punching holes in paper is all good and fun, but its just not as viscerally satisfying as watching that rascally orange clay explode into glorious shattery bits. *PUUUUUULLLLLLLLL***

Heh, heh - I'll let you know when I have that feeling - puuuuuull ........ pullllllllll AGAIN !............. pull AGAIN !! ........

Joining the club here. Shot trap the first time at Silverdale. Oh man, I'm hooked! I only have a tactical shotty but was doing ok for a newbie shooting trap. Now I want to buy a 26" or 28" shotty. :)

As far as what shotgun to use (O/U, Pump, Semi) they all bust clays. Find one that fits you right and is comfortable and you'll be happy popping those pesky orange disks. Personally I shoot a 870 express 28" and it works great for me.

Went out this weekend for the first time & hit 3 out of 5 the first time, but never got better than 4 in a row. Another guy with us was new as well and hit 9 in a row on his 5th or 6th go around. 250 rounds later and 2 boxes of clays and I am hooked, can't wait to go again!!!

Was this actual trap,or just out with your own thrower?

I was using my own thrower, the kind you can mount on a tire and also a hand thrower. It was kind of interesting because the tire was a bit light and moved sometimes so the next clay went in a different direction sometimes. Tons of fun though... going to go out soon again.
