went to shoot some trap, but my buddy talked me into a round of skeet at the end of the day. Never tried it before, so I figured why not?

woohoo! that is some fun!:D

I totally had the wrong gun, as I brought my backup gun with fixed m/f chokes ... but even so, only lost 5 birds total. Beginners luck!

But those last two crossing birds are wicked fast!

How's a 20g work on that game? Or is 12g best?

With open chokes just about any gauge is good for skeet. I've used the 12, 20 and 28 with similar results. Using the .410 however makes the game more challenging.

Stupid Game ! No one gun is really good is for skeet, so buy a few.
Best advice ... gun fit and balance .. uses 9's.

Yep, kidding. Welcome aboard ... now get out there and keep shooting
with something with a little less choke till you can run-em !
( And, oh, by the way ... after your first-ever 25 straight at skeet, it's
customary for everyone on your squad to "shoot yer hat" when your done -
and you should really wear it that way ( full of No. 9 shot holes) till you
"clear the board" by shooting another straight !!!

I actually shot skeet for the first time as well on Sunday! Had no intention of dooing so, but I had to undergo an "orientation" as part of the signup process at the orillia gun club. The fellow giving me the orientation encouraged me to actually shoot (I could have just watched) so I thought what the hell.....and grabbed my SG out of the truck. Heres the funny part...the gun I had with me (was getting a part at epps so I brought it) is a full camo 22" mossy 595 with a modified choke tube! I got some looks....but did really well! Had an absolute friggen riot shooting as well. The people at the club were excellent in every way, and the guy who stuck with me through the course (I cant for the life of me remember his name :( ) should be an instructor. FANTASTIC!

I'm gonna try sporting clays for the first time on Wed. (I'm even gonna bring the same gun :) )

9's for skeet, huh?

Well like I said, I only had my backup trap gun with fixed chokes, and 7 1/2 trap loads.... so next time out I will be better prepared - and shoot worse, no doubt! :D:D

My son and i use 8's for both trap aqnd skeet.
AI have never noticed the difference.
I sometimes use a F/M Superposed for skeet just for fun.
The are no rules on what choke you HAVE to use, but open chokes are far beter for busting skeet birds.
We get a lot of fellas shooting camo'd guns on our range, practicing for hunting.
Our club is a pretty gregarious bunch, and we have a lot of fun!

Myself, I don't shoot all four gauges, only 12.
Sometimes I use my 16 gauge black powder gun though!:D

It's all good as long as you are shooting!

Most Club's will let you use 7-1/2's if you want ...

But let's see SKEET ... 21 yards ... 1 oz. of 9's is 585 pellets, 1 oz. of 8's is 410 and 1 oz. of 7-1/2's is about 350 - Yup, I'll take 9's !!!

All around best size shot for most clay target games, if you can only manage 1 size ? Yeah, I'd stick with 8's too ... but strictly for skeet , I'll go with 9's.
Every time. Wanna shoot better scores, by all means use Skeet chokes, that's what they're for ! And for fun, shoot a .410 at Skeet ... in the long run, you'll learn a lot more than you might think.
