First time this has happened to me

We rattled in a little 4X4 last night that stopped about 40 yards away. My hunting partner was force to shoot off the wrong shoulder and missed. The buck took off. 30 minutes later he comes back up the exact same trail following a doe and a bump-buck fawn. This time he wasn't so lucky. All three deer were dropped within 30 yards of each other.

For me at 27 yards that would have been a head shot. :D

Running?? I personally would've made body shot when he's hightailing it outta "Dodge",Chances at wounding or inflicting an unethical shot(taking an ear, chunk off the back of the neck, snout etc..) would've been a greater chance IMO.
Maybe a shotgun would've worked?? But definately a body shot was the way to go:D
That's my .02cents

With his smiley, I think Calum was being sarcastic

or he could of thought you were part of the stone pile

Agreed:) I had this happen several times. In fact a few days ago I had a very nice 5x5 buck do this to me while I was sitting on top of a woodpile in a logging area. He was in slingshot range:D He kept hanging around and would look at me but would not leave until he finally got downwind and got my scent. This happens and all I have left is my antlerless tag to use. So I hopelessly watch without shooting until he finally left. I find that if you are perfectly still and they don't see any movement they think you are a tree or rock and often act as if you are not even there until they get your scent. Since they are supposedly color blind and you are sitting on a rock or wood pile they would likely very well think you are just another rock on the pile.

Well now I'm curious???
Is there actually a province that won't let you shoot a buck with a antlerless tag
Or did you maybe have another reason to pass up a nice little buck in favour of a doe:confused:

This kind of thing happens to our guys time and time again. Deer was likely pre-occuppied. Either little head was doing the thinking, or he was trying to escape a scent he picked up, possibly even yours.
He may alo have just thought you were a rock or stump.
I've shot many deer even while dogging, and purposely making noise, at close range.
Also, at night, it's possible to aproach deer quite closely. They used to gather in the field behind the hunt camp at night. If you went out for a leak, they'd just stand and watch. Darkness appears to give them security.
