Well,

I'm headed out for my first hunt ever this weekend. Going with a few fellows who have done some guiding in the past. I will have my deer tags with me so hopefully it will be an interesting time. I'm looking forward to the experience.

Any opinions on hunting in the mountains during the cold season? Kit, clothing, etc (any special care for my gun taking it out in colder weather) would be nice. I've done cold weather camping before but never hunting. I imagine it would probably be the same as cold weather camping / hiking.

Thanks again - you guys rock!

Go easy on the gun oil, maybe no oil at all on the working parts depending how cold it is.

May the deer Gods smile upon you!

Stick a round in each pocket so there will be one there when you look for one.
Two rounds together make neat clinking noises, not good.
Scope should be set closer to the low power if it is a variable power scope.
Practice aiming positions out in the bush, you're not at the range with rests.
Good luck.
Oh, cut some tags.............

skunked on the buck and the only elk we saw was in the back of another guys truck. It was a nice setup for the day....a light dusting of snow in the mountain tops the night before (not enough to get the deer freaked tho)... Beautiful sunrise and all. In the WMU we were in whitetail doe wasnt open and thats about all we saw. Lots of sign for elk (prints, scat, etc) but none would show their face.

I took a few pics and you can find them here. All in all a really good trip - I cant wait to go again.

The big bucks aren't doing too much yet, but a few new scrapes showing up daily. Another ten days yet before they get stupid.
