I am getting my rifle this monday and should have all the gear for this upcoming match.

I have never attended the match nor watched it before and would like to
participate for the 1st time.

I have shot a lot of matches at TMSA with IPSC and know from reading the forum that you will still need us to go thru a safety course.

Can I come up earlier that Sunday ?

I know the equipment requirements but any useful info not on website would help.

Hmm.......no replies, so I'll tackle it.
Most of the info and conversation regarding these matches is under the "Events and Gatherings" section, btw.
There is no formal "safety course" as such before you can shoot at the Tac Rifle matches, but there is a comprehensive shooters' safety meeting before the match. Many of the shooters at the matches are experienced at either IPSC or other shooting game disciplines, so we consider everyone "safe". A very close eye is kept on everyone by the Match organizers and RO's, with everyone taking responsibility for his/her safety and the safety of those around him/her. Any unsafe weapon handling, either perceived or real is not tolerated and offenders will be turfed from the match.
Don't worry...if you've shot IPSC you'll feel right at home at the TMSA Tac Rifle match. This is where you find out that a rifle is more difficult to shoot in a match at close range than you ever imagined.  The 5-round magazine limit which means more mag changes adds to the interest (and laughter from the peanut gallery, I might add).
I presume that you're asking if you can come up earlier that Sunday so you can practice? That's usually not on the schedule, but if you show up for the working party on the saturday (day before the match) there will be an opportunity to shoot a few rounds and zero your rifle if necessary.
Just bring your rifle, A SLING (important), about 100 rounds of ammo (I bring about 120 rnds), at least 4 mags and some sort of magazine pouches/carriers.
If you have any other questions, just post 'em in the TMSA Tac Rifle thread in Events and Gatherings

Thanks for the reply.

Six Star, I was actually thinking of the Safety meeting. If my memory served me right (which I think is now wrong) , you have the safety meeting on Saturday, not Sunday, so I was just asking if I could come up earlier to attend a "solo safety meeting". I guess you moved it to Sunday then.

I heard .223 is in short supply. Any dealer w lots in Vancouver ?

We'll answer any questions you might have on either day ... time is a bit shorter on the actual match day, mind you. We keep things as simple as possible, I don't believe you'll have any trouble ...

and more important is a way to keep the sling attached to yourself so as not to drag your rifle in the dirt

 Yeh yeh yeh... :p Serves me right for going cheap with an Uncle Mike's sling. Well, you are gonna be GREEN WITH ENVY when ya see my new ASP single point sling. With HK hooks made in America instead of Outer Mongolia.
Well, at least it proved that you can bury an AR in sand, dig it out and still shoot a couple more stages. 8)

Safety meeting is held just prior to the match on sunday...no worries there.
Yes, .223 is in short supply. If you see it, buy it.

saturday there is usually a setup then some rifle sighting later on. usually starts around 3pm.

last i heard lever, reliable and hunters had some. not $4/box but still good pricing. royal had some too but you have to ask nicely

Got the 45g UMC from Lever. I was hoping for 55g but couldn't find them.

Now, have to find a sling, and hopefully sparrow gets my 2 extra mags before the match.

All this and I dont have my rifle yet !

Mike K,

Thanks for the tip, I work from 2:30 everyday next week.
Pick up the rifle Monday morning, Tuesday go to Dave's to c if I can just get a simple sling. From talking to a few people, I just need a sling for carrying it from range to range and not really when shooting. I will just decide after I get my rifle to c which sling I need. Thank you SIX STAR FOR THE OFFER, If slings somehow dissapeared for sale, I will take you up on the offer. Thursday, go up the range to zero rife at POCO , Friday for emergency fixes and should be ready to go on Sunday.

Power Wagon,
Thanks also for the advice about the mags. Sparrow told me the same thing about Service Rifle Shoot and my experience w IPSC is the same. There is something about us shooters that made us very friendly,.... must be the smell of gunpowder in the morning.

See you at the match !

 Sparrow been coaching you?

Oh..edited to add: I've got a mag or two I can lend you.

No worries. I will give a shout if I need it.

I had gone to Hunter hoping to talk to Brock about getting into Service Rifle. This was based on reading the Service Rifle Forum. I went there and Brock was busy. I told Sparrow about what I was looking for and he offered me tips and what gear I needed for Service Rifle shoot. From that initial conversation, I had talked to Sparrow since.

I didnt know he shoots tact rifle too.

Sparrow coaches ?????

I did see his name on the BC Service Rifle website and didnt know that he had won in a match (or qualifier or whatever they call a day's competition) after I talked to him.

Immmprresssivve.

the coaching comment was a bit of a slag actually. Sparrow is well known for his "battle zero's" obtained either the night before, or the day of a match. For all that he is a damn good shooter when he puts his mind to it.

Hey, this time was no different, I zeroed a new Aimpoint at 9:00am just before the match with about 10 or 15rds, got it close enough, got yelled and sworn at by the TMSA RO, guess we woke him from his nap. 8)
