So I've been firing hi-powered bolt action rifles since I was 14. Learned to shoot when I was 12 with a .410 and a Cooey model 60.
Hunting rifle was a Remington 788 in .243 Winchester, and the occasional longer shot with dads .270 or .25-06, or gramps' .300 Wby.
Fired a couple of revolvers on a scout camp once when our leader took his guns with him despite the laws. 2 cylinders of .22 (18 shots) and I took 3 pot shots at an 8.5x11 I stapled to a tree with a .38 special from about 30 yards. (hit with 2 of them). So all in all I have managed, in my entire lifetime to fire 21 shots with a handgun... ever, 15 years ago, and never with an automatic.
10 Years with an expired Minors FAC, this year I finally applied for my PAL, and picked this one up about 3 weeks ago:
*****apparently dropbox won't let you share photos anymore. I'll fix tomorrow*****
and I FINALLY got my reg cert in the mail a week ago on Tuesday. So I went out to the range on Wednesday and took it out. What a different experience. I was hooked when I picked up the pistol, but after firing it all I want to do is get better and shoot a hell of a lot more.
So this is gonna sound dumb, but be nice on me, I'm a newb. I realized how shooting a pistol is nothing like shooting a rifle. Every rifle I've ever fired, save the .22s, kick at you hard. You feel it, your entire world shifts after you squeeze that thing for a split hair second before you realign that scope to see if your meals for the winter managed to drop to the ground.
Well... shooting a pistol is nothign like that. I've read enough threads on here about trigger control and anticipating recoil. I did not know what to expect at all so I tried to think to myself that nothing was going to happen when I pulled the trigger, rather than getting ready for any blowback.
It turns out.. the pistol doesn't actually try to hammer you to death. It just kinda jumps in your hand. I feel like I could shoot a handgun all day without much fatigue except for maybe my eyes.
I know I limp wristed it a bit. I have my grip figured out i'm just trying not to squeeze the hell out of it and I haven't found the happy medium between "death grip on the gun" and "relaxed and confident." But... here is my first 10 shots, ever, in my whole life, with an automatic.
I was using old blue prints from work since I'm cheap, and we were shooting from about 12 yards. I was aiming at the circle.
By my 3rd magazine I had managed to group the last 8 shots (first 2 were low, trying to figure out my POA/POI) were in a nice 4 inch group.
I only shot 30 shots with the pistol and then finished the day with a game of battleship with my buddy. I'm on the right. (he won by 3 points). I definitely think I have the bug.
