so heres my first hunting experiance story....

so turkey opened last monday. it sucked i had to work all day, getting out in the feild at about 4:00 pm leaving me just about 3 hours to figure things out. seeing as ive never hunted turkey befor i fifgured if anything itd be good practice for my calling.

so i get out to my spot, sit down, called for about an hour and didnt get any response. my dad said hed seen a giant tom walking out of the bush every few days so i was hoping to catch a glimpse, but nothing. so i packed up and headed to the back of his property where i know there will be some birds.

i crest a hill, in an open feild which i knew was bad but there was no cover to sneak back. there was one bird in the feild and ran into the bush, it was to far to see if it were a hen or tom.

so i get up to where the bird ran into, and called. no replies.

there was a creek running into the woods near by, goes in about 50 yards and then runs parallel with the feild, so it was nearing 6:30 i figured id go in, call for a bit, and come back out through the bush and head back up to the house.

i got to the edge of the woods, and i creeped out, luckily i did because there were 4 monsted toms walking towards me, about 100 yards out. so i started calling, 2 started to strut, then they started to fight. which was pretty neat to watch. so i call and call, its now 6:45 and i get them to about 45 yards, i draw back my compound bow and let a shot fly.

2" high right over the back of the biggest tom :( never saw them again.

so i was out every night that week, no luck.

saturday, up at 5am, in the bush for 6am.

did a locator call, the entire bush errupted with turkey gobbles. i could hear about 9 different gobbles all at once.

so i set up a decoy this time, started calling. 3 small jakes came up but the decoy was in the wrong dirrection because i was anticipating birds from the other way. so i let them go, knowing there are bigger.

i packed up and kept calling trying to figure out where the birds were moving to. so long story short, find a place, set up the decoy, and sit down.

just as i'm about to call, BOOM BOOM BOOM. 3 shots which were no more then 50 yds away from me go off. i was pissed, nobody had permission to hunt there, and they just spoiled my hunt. and who fires 3 shots at a turkey? unless hes illigally shooting more then 1 bird.

anyways, it was about 8am now, i figured id give it 20 mins for things to settle down, then try calling again.

first call, nothing, 2nd call, gobble. i was really surprised to hear after what just went on. i let a few mins go by, and call. 3 gobbles, they are coming closer. call back and forth, next thing i can see them.

in they come, full strut. about 30 yards out. they all lost interest in the decoy pretty quick and just kept walking about 25 yards to my side. i realized i was going to miss this opportunity, so i raised my shotgun this time, and once the last bird waked into my shooting lane i pulled the trigger. down he went.

i shot him at 25 yards with a mossberg 500 turkey barrel and turkey choke, #4 turkey shell copper coated and got 11 through and through shots center mass. i was very surprised to see that.

anyways, 19lbs 9 1/4" beard, 7/8" and 1" spurrs.

sorry for the novel. it was a very exciting week of hunting.

now that i got the first one out of the way, i need to get one with my compound bow

Congratulations on your first Turkey. When you say center mass do you mean you shot him in the body? As in where all the delicious turkey meat lives?

Turkey season seems to bring out the yahoos, I caught two people trespassing so far, one after he had killed a Gobbler I called in, he was sitting up the field from us without a call or decoys.

Where abous in Ontario are you?

Yea unfortunetly I hit him where the meat is :( I aimed for head but it was a prettygood distance a few spread and hit the body

I hunt in the Cayuga area, just south of Hamilton

I would have went looking for those trespassing jackasses as soon as they fired there shots.Loud hot and heavy so they new is was coming mad as hell.
I cant stand people trespassing on my private land.
Makes me boil!

Well enough of that, congrats on a fine first gobbler!
