First two SKS for me

Yesterday, I joined the SKS family. I need to do some reading up on identifying marks, but, I figured I could post up a quick picture. Bottom rifle, I bought to shoot, myself. The top one, I bought to fix up. Got a very good deal on the fixer. Just couldn't say no to the price.



Looks like I've got some cleaning to do. :rockOn:

It says it is a 1954. The furniture could use some tlc. Other than that, I'm not sure. I figure, worst case scenario, I can use it as a learner. I got it for 70 bucks. So, not too worried. I plan on a complete disassembly tonight, after hunting.
 
I was thinking. I should put the $70 rifle in a tacticool stock and shoot a case of ammo through it, then put it up for sale on the EE. :)

Should be able to get seven or eight hundred for it. Maybe more.
 
Well, I cleaned "Ugly Betty", got the cosmoline off. The wood was even covered. She cleaned up good. Did a two shot function test. Works good. The wood just needs a little tlc and she will be a very nice shooter. I had the date wrong on her. She's a 1952 Tula. She sure is a diamond in the rough. Unless the barrel does a horrible shotgun spread, I think it's the best 70 bucks I spent.


 
You got a smokin good deal! Cosmoline says that it was bought "new" and then not used! I don't see anything that says it needs any work
it is just the way most re-furb SKS are (badly re-lacquered). Nice polished bayonet, those are not common! What finish, BBQed or blued?:confused:
 
Blued finish. Stock has a gouge on the left side that I'd like to smooth out. Barrel has sharp rifling and has visible chrome ring around the bore on the end of the barrel.

Deal of the Year! How come I never get anything like this? Most SKS stocks have damage even if they are "supergrade" or "unissued". Do you see
any other markings on the Receiver cover that look like a diamond or a square with a slash thru it? How about an electroplated "Made in Russia" on
the barrel under the gas tube?
 
No other marks on the receiver cover. There's nothing electroplated under the gas tube, I just see some scratches that look like something got between the gas tube and the barrel and was wiggled around. Does that mean "Ugly Betty" could actually be an unrefurbed?

Unrefurbed!? Maybe....what does the left side of the stock show for stampings and are there cartouche stampings around the front stock bolt?
Most unrefurbed that I have seen, have had a very nice lacquer on the stock but yours does not appear to be clear and glossy (from what I can tell).
But I am not that experienced, for all I know many unrefurbs came to Canada after some hard use by soldiers rather than 60 years of storage.
The lack of an electroplated "Made in Russia 7.62x39 CNA?" means that it is an earlier import. The scratchings mean someone pried the gas tube off.
Being refurbed is not a bad thing for an SKS, especially if they did a good job and did not paint it. Would that be a "light" refurb? No need to stamp?

Left side of the butt stock has the Tula star and arrow. The serial number, and a hexagon with a cross in it.

There are no stampings around the front stock bolt on either side of the stock.

I'm sure I know less than you on these rifles. Yesterday was the first time I'd ever seen one in person. I bought the rifle with the laminated stock first just to get one before they are prohibited. :) It is a Tula with no year stamp.

This older one was offered to me from a friend once he heard I had bought the other one. I figured if it could be cleaned up and fired safely, I could have a "project" rifle too. I've got lots of reading to do on these rifles.
