First two SKS for me

Left side of the butt stock has the Tula star and arrow. The serial number, and a hexagon with a cross in it.

There are no stampings around the front stock bolt on either side of the stock.

I'm sure I know less than you on these rifles. Yesterday was the first time I'd ever seen one in person. I bought the rifle with the laminated stock first just to get one before they are prohibited. :) It is a Tula with no year stamp.

This older one was offered to me from a friend once he heard I had bought the other one. I figured if it could be cleaned up and fired safely, I could have a "project" rifle too. I've got lots of reading to do on these rifles.

You will have fun reading now that you have a personal stake in the information! Because there are no inspection cartouches (stamped markings) around
the front stock bolt, it can't be an un-refurb. But it is a very high quality refurb which can be better than un-refurbed because they fixed everything.
What does a hexagon with a cross in it mean, on the stock of an SKS?

Man $70 bucks is awesome! Ugly betty functions so I would not tacticool it unless its uncomfortable to shoot in the original configuration. Lucky man - great pickup. And at $70 there is no better parts gun if needed.

Well, I have an update on Ugly Betty. She shoots well. She can group Barnaul 123gr HP rounds in a 2" circle at 100 yards.

And this afternoon she killed her first deer. A nice mulie doe. About 80 yards. Took 2 steps and fell over. Snuck the bullet between 2 ribs entrace and took out 1 rib exit. Heart and lungs.

Gotta say, she's proving to be a darn good deal. Best 70 bucks I've ever spent.

Wow! You don't waste any time. What did you use for sights?

I want more of these rifles. I'm gonna improve the sights on Ugly Betty. Keep the laminate sks as is. I think I'll get another for a rail and 1-4 power scope. And another for full tacticool.

Covers all bases.

Last night, Ugly Betty was confirmed to be an "interesting" sks. So I am going to leave her as is. She shoots well enough.

My other sks is a 55/56. No date on top of the cover. The cover, receiver, bolt carrier, bolt and trigger are numbers matching. The mag and stock are not matching. It is a refurb with bbq paint and a laminate stock.

Pictures will be posted once I have a chance. This one, I will see how it shoots and put a holosight on it. I hope it turns out to be a good shooter too.

Hey svehn; What happened last night to confirm Ugly Betty as "interesting" ? Your other SKS is a completely normal refurb and fair game for sporterizing.

Was chatting with a guy and he sent a couple pics of Ugly Betty to a friend of his that is very knowledgeable on sks.

His friend has never seen the hexagon with the cross in it. He called it an interesting rifle. Figure it is pretty unique then.

I have been looking into a mark on Ugly Betty, it is on the left side of the butt stock beside the Tula stamp. I cant find any concrete info on what this mark is. If anyone has come across this mark before, I would love to know what it signifies. It is a hexagon with a cross in it.

And a closeup

Well alright! I can become knowledgable also then. Thanks for pointing it out. I just noticed Ugly Betty's serial number, 1941, she is a keeper!
I went to Grouse River in Kelowna today to see if I could find any diamonds in the rough among the SKS going on sale tommorrow for $170 each,
but nothing jumped out at me, let me know if anyone else gets themselves a good deal.
