So I bought my first 10/22 the other day. It was used, had been sitting on the shelf for a year or so but the price was right.

I bought a box of american eagle ammo with it as well as a new HC3R 25 rd mag.

I didnt have time to take the gun down and clean it before going out the next morning to shoot it. Perhaps my first mistake.

Using the AA ammo on either magazine, I had a lot of misfeeds as well as rounds that simply did not fit in the chamber. We shot a bit of clp on the extractor and it certainly helped the issue, but did not entirely correct it.

The AA ammo also fed like complete crap in the HC3R mag.

Luckily a friend had a few hundred rounds of winchester, which fed significantly better, but still had failed ejections every 20 rounds or so.

As for accuracy, it was spot on. Decent groupings at 100yds considering I had never shot it before.

I love iron sights, so Im curious if there are any suggestions for better irons.

On that note, I am also thinking about a red dot like a sparc, is there a rail that most people suggest?

Once home, I tore the gun down and cleaned it properly. Ive pretty much written off the AA ammo, winchester was a reasonable option. What is the consensus on best ammo for the 10/22?

I appreciate any feedback, I friggin love this thing so far, even with a few hiccups.

I would do a search on FTF/FTE, and ammunition. Winchester might be a good option, but many people have reported issues with the grey box (not sure which version that is). Also stay away from Remington Golden Bullets, as there's been issues reported with that. Try it out with CCI SV or Blazers and see how it reacts.

As for the rail... You've got a few options. I think a number of aftermarket companies stock picatinny/weaver rails for the 10/22; Dlask and Kidd are two I can think of offhand. For the irons, you can go with Tech Sights or Fire Sights... I believe the former come with a rail for mounting on the 10/22, so you could effectively run both the RDS and the irons on the same gun. You would just have to get a see-through sight mount, or remove the RDS in order to use the irons.

Now lets see some pictures!

Blazer is noticeably hotter and feeds very well in most .22s. 10/22s love em. There's tons of iron sight options from fiber optic OE style, Tech sights, Williams peep/fiber optic combo, Skinner lo-pro etc. Your rifle would have come with a rail from the factory but since you bought it used it may not have been included. In the past I've cut down the factory rails to work with the techsights and lower 1/3 cowitness. Now I just run a Skinner brass Lo-pro with .125" aperture and a .450" Skinner brass blade with the back edge painted black. The brass hardware goes good with the blonde wood, polished reciever and brass filler screws for the 3 unused scope base holes.
