First year bear baiting..

To the OP. A barrel in the background will greatly help judge the size of a bear. A bear 3/4 of standing barrel that isn’t “filled out”, looks tall and skinny, is an average bear imo. Once they’re as tall as a barrel, and especially if “filled out” you’re looking at a big bear. If you’re using a roller barrel, can the barrel fit under the bear? If it’s close, that’s a big bear.

Wife just took her first bear Monday. I just finished mixing it up with 50% of our pastured pork and hi mountain breakfast blend. Mine was taken on the 10th. It’s our favourite meat but a ton of work. I trim all fat off and take a lot of care to get it cooled down asap which is usually a lot harder in spring bear season than a fall hunting season.

Another showed up. He/she (pronouns matter) is actually on the bait as I post this at 10am. My buddy is trying a stalk on it.

bear baiting is not my thing. i hunted and guided for in quebec but that is the only way to hunt correctly a bear where you cannot spot and stalk. but there is but its because it s not my thing that i ll prevent anyone to hunt a legal where they are: not my problem and if someone is judging what others are doing legally that person is maybe the problem.

it take a lot of preparations tries to get some result but you have to do it to knows about it. in the west here if baiting was legal we will get more problem as grizzlies might come as well ... but many are bypassing the laws in leaving the guts/carcass of moose or other animals and come after a few days to see if a grizzly around but it is not called baiting ...

A barrel in the background you say, lol How about one on the rim? Or in the barrel?

Agreed, and its typically western hunters who have poor opinions on baiting, as they get to see bears often in the open areas. In the Ontario forests, there is only one reasonable way to hunt bears and that is by baiting. I would love to spot and stalk bears out west someday, but its just not realistic in the thick bush.
Baiting is a very useful management tool, if we didn't bait bears in Ontario and other thick bush regions, the harvest would be cut by 95% easy, leading to all the other bear issues that occure.

Northern Alberta and Saskatchewan are mostly bush and muskeg, baiting is the best option to even see one.

Grizz

You can call it whatever you want to make yourself feel better, but it's baiting, and legal in the Yukon. It's the very reason most outfitters won't do a stand alone grizzly hunt but prefer a moose/grizzly combo.

the subtility in the laws: is saying baiting is illegal but not leaving unattended carcass or guts, did you see the differences?

Bears are targeting the sweet stuff in one of the baits we have out. Candy/chocolate/sugar cones/jam etc...

They actually ripped the barrel off the tree to roll it around & dump the 120lbs of dog food out to get at the 60lbs of candy on the bottom... Friggen dog food everywhere lol!

Reattached the barrel to the tree & they've not been able to get it loose 'yet'... Need the barrel in place to judge size when they come in...

the food all around will attract birds and squirrels then extra bears ...
bears are clever and sweet sutff is the way to go once they got on feeding mood ...

have fun Jay the most important.

I'm currently after the bear pictured below, but have to finish tagging out clients first.

Last client tagged out Monday night..I got that crew set up on walleyes today and then slipped out this evening to see if the big guy would show up... nope... settled on this 300 pound boar. My new Ruger M77 .450 Marlin put it down fast... with a 350 grain Speer... lots of burgers and spaghetti sauce coming up.
