First year bear baiting..

Last client tagged out Monday night..I got that crew set up on walleyes today and then slipped out this evening to see if the big guy would show up... nope... settled on this 300 pound boar. My new Ruger M77 .450 Marlin put it down fast... with a 350 grain Speer... lots of burgers and spaghetti sauce coming up.

nice bear and beautiful head.

Bears are targeting the sweet stuff in one of the baits we have out. Candy/chocolate/sugar cones/jam etc...

They actually ripped the barrel off the tree to roll it around & dump the 120lbs of dog food out to get at the 60lbs of candy on the bottom... Friggen dog food everywhere lol!

Reattached the barrel to the tree & they've not been able to get it loose 'yet'... Need the barrel in place to judge size when they come in...

Late reply. I met a father/son physician team while moose hunting last fall. They were successful no BS bear hunters (who had the photos to prove). They shared that powdered Jello or juice crystals spread around their setups was very effective. Apparently bears would track and spread the scent which would draw in more game. (?)

Honestly always thought tricking animals with a barrel of food and killing them is very sad and unsportsmanlike...

Well I guess it saves the effort of actually getting out into the bush and walking around and locating the game. I know what my old dad and all my uncles and their hunting buddies (mostly loggers) would think of it. Great shots, great stalkers.

Congrats to you both. Fine looking beasts.

Congrats on the bear.

I'm a big fan of baiting...both deer and bear. 1. Increases the chance of putting meat in the freezer. 2. Better opportunity for a fast clean kill shot. 3. I've seen some of the coolest things while sitting in the stand. You get to enjoy the ones you're not going to shoot, or see the coyotes up close, other other animals you weren't expecting. Me and my son had a bobcat walk right up to us and look into our blind window last year. I now bring a camera with me and get just as excited about taking pics of the things i see that i'm not hunting, but come in for the bait.

Nice bears taken.
There can be a great deal of effort involved with baiting bears.
Far as I'm concerned there's no difference between sitting on a bear bait or on the edge of a crop field waiting for deer to walk out.
Except bear baiting involves much more work.

If i may address the elephant in the room, wouldn't it be better from a business standpoint to have a client shoot that one? Congrats on the bear you got, nice one.

The bear in question was not in the guiding area, but back in my home woods. Of course the clients always come first.

I like to actually "hunt" personally

This spring season alone I put 4500 km on the truck, 900 km on the boat, I walked 80 km carrying 70 pounds, I sat in the bush for 100 hours... I watched over 100 bears, two dozen moose, wolves, coyotes, lynx, fisher and Martin, not to mention a plethora of birds and raptors... Yeah, personally I like to hunt too.
