First year bear baiting..

Honestly always thought tricking animals with a barrel of food and killing them is very sad and unsportsmanlike...

Luckily, no one asked you about your personal moral quandaries.

It's kinda hard to tell without something in there for scale...barrel, dead hooker, you know...the usual things. But why not ground score him? He looks good enough for that.

This spring season alone I put 4500 km on the truck, 900 km on the boat, I walked 80 km carrying 70 pounds, I sat in the bush for 100 hours... I watched over 100 bears, two dozen moose, wolves, coyotes, lynx, fisher and Martin, not to mention a plethora of birds and raptors... Yeah, personally I like to hunt too.

So, like me, you're also wishing you had sheep so you could make real money lol

I would need all that cash for new knees...
Never got into guiding for money, nobody but a kid does... which I was when I started. The body complains more than it used to, but I still love being in the woods, and working to get someone else an opportunity at a nice animal just gives me more reason to do it. I am prepared for the inevitable, in the not so distant future, where my body can't keep up with my spirit... I've still got a few good years left in me.

Congrats on the bear.

I'm a big fan of baiting...both deer and bear. 1. Increases the chance of putting meat in the freezer. 2. Better opportunity for a fast clean kill shot. 3. I've seen some of the coolest things while sitting in the stand. You get to enjoy the ones you're not going to shoot, or see the coyotes up close, other other animals you weren't expecting. Me and my son had a bobcat walk right up to us and look into our blind window last year. I now bring a camera with me and get just as excited about taking pics of the things i see that i'm not hunting, but come in for the bait.

Agreed, watching a beautiful red fox walking in the next field come to my mouse squeek noise (poorly done with my mouth lol) and then proceed to stalk a squirrel within 20yrds of me is something i will always remember. Wish i had a camera with me!

But that's more of a stand hunter vs ground hunter thing in my opinion, not exactly only about baiting.

nobody said anything about it but this is a great spirit and will, thank you for keeping up Greg.

I like to actually "hunt" personally

Lots of different kinds of hunting. Just because it's not one of the types you do 'personally' doesn't take anything away from it.

A couple spring/summer/falls of my misspent (according to my parents and the local constabulary) youth were spent working in a fishing camp in Northern Ontario.

The bear hunts (over bait) were a highlight and source of many great memories. It's not easy to get a bear coming in regularly, especially when you have someone sitting on the bait.

Grew up a 'country-boy' in the heart of some of the best farmland (Bruce Township in Bruce County) and mainly unspoiled bush/forest (Queen's Bush) in Ontario. Most free time was spent tramping the fields and bush with Cooey Model 39 which was my Father's first .22.

Hunted all types of game from squirrels and groundhogs to deer/moose/elk as well as birds (upland to water-fowl) with gun and bow.

The person baiting and sitting in a stand is no less of a 'hunter' than the person stalking the woods, in my opinion.

To each his own, just get out and enjoy the wilderness while we still have it. Introduce your friends, family and children to it - wilderness/hunting/firearms - the more on our side the better.

Congrats OP, that's a beautiful bear. It's bigger than I thought it would be from the pictures!

Somewhat related, I live in NS and am interested in hunting black bear next season. Does anyone have some good links to how to get started / what to know for a brand new hunter? Even judging boar/sow seems somewhat difficult for me as I've only seen a few bears in the wild. I am also considering a guided hunt for my first experience.

Cheers

hand to hand combat maybe? weight classes?

maybe there should be ground rules, like in a judo match. no biting and no hitting below the belt?

Who's all going out soon? I'm baiting and have my tree stand set up. Put bait out Aug 01 - no hits yet. Will be my third year hunting bear, with one down so far.

I'm thinking about hunting them from my deer blind this year. Fall season opens Sep 1st. Had lots of bears come into my apples the past few years, so might try to take a couple of them out before deer season opens. Only thing i'm not sure of is being so close to the bait. My stand is on the ground about 20 yards away, heavy bush all around. Wondering if thats too close to be on the ground. Also not sure if the bear bait will keep the deer away.(grease, bread, dog food)
