Well it finally happened, about my third time trying, and this one was unplanned! I just finished sighting in my new Hawkeye .270, and said "what the hell, I have the call on me, lets try!" I set up in some shrubs behind a hay bale and started blowing into my cottontail screamer.

Figuring the 10 rifle shots not 10 minutes earlier would have scared everything away, I didn't have too much hope. Much to my surprise, about 30 seconds later I spot one running through a field 250 meters away, and my friggin heart just started pounding like mad! I got him in the scope, and for a second I doubted if I was a hunter because I couldn't pull the trigger on the guy. By the time I collected myself, it was gone, and I was pissed.

After some more calling, a different 'yote came out of some bush headed straight towards me, and not stopping. It was at about 100 meters when I remembered reading that barking like a dog will make them stop, and yes, it did.:D

It was a young female, and while I hit it a couple inches higher that I thought I should have, the dance of death was only about 3 seconds long, and she was gone. It was the most exciting thing I've done in a while, and thanks to this and some other forums, I'm hooked!

Nice rifle!:D

I have had days where I shot targets all afternoon with deer in the next field and have also had coyotes come out to the same field. (usually when I'm not ready for it...) The shots don't seem to bother any animals, at least in the summer...

Psssstt, dude, there's something wrong with that rifle.
The bolt is on the wrong side, or was it a photo development error:)
Sorry couldn't resist.
Congrats on your first wild dog.
Nice piece of kit also.

Thanks for the comments, guys!

And leadslinger, yeah, the bolt handle is on the wrong side. I want my right-handed friends to get their own guns!

Congrats big time,
Not for the yote , as much as for the comments

This is very common first couple times out, it tells much about the person..
First off you were very aware of that bullet, and the animal , and getting a good hit, strong ethics..more folks should tell all.

The barking thing, I picked up the best hunting video in a long time, on coyote hunting, at walmart, excellent video...the fella stopped many with the bark..:D

Congrats on your first coyote!

"and my friggin heart just started pounding like mad! "

That still happens to me for almost every animal I get in my sights.:D
(the ones coyote size and bigger anyways).

Actually I have to wait a few seconds until I calm down a little in order
to get a steady shot. I have missed some opportunities during this wait
but I like to have a steady aim before I pull the trigger.:)

Grats on the first yote.

I've seen moose on the road next to our local gun club after a couple of hours of clay busting. I've also been told that once a moose actually ran onto the live firing range. lol

Congrats big time,
