Lately i am reading a bit everywhere on the subject and will order a 1911 gunsmith book, because i love having project guns.
Fitting a 1911 barrel is still a new concept to me, and while i am not relying on forums to get the job done, just poking around for opinions.

I purchased a barely used STI Edge 2011 bull barrel. I currently own a 1911 STI Trojan (40SW).
The trojan and the edge use the same slide, exept the trojan has an added stirrup cut and the edge they round topped the slide (i have owned and used both to some extent)

Now i just dropped in the edge barrel in the trojan without any fitting, just to see where things start. Bull barrel is sporting a #3 link
It dropped fit and cycles, there is lockup (havent measured yet) and it feeds 100%, the barrel feedramp is flush with frame feedramp when slide is locked and pushing on barrel.

Barrel is sitting low in front of slide, there is almost a little too much tension here.
Tried 2 mags out of it tonight for fun, cycled very good, had quite the drastic vertical stringing.

Since barrel is factory fitted to a factory edge, and edge shares grossly the same slide as trojan, i believe it will have very little fitting to lugs to be done.
I am wondering if not enough or too much upper lug lockup is causing this.

At the time i'd have RK cutom guns fit bull barrels for me, he'd always use a #4 EGW link to achieve his 50thou lockup he always wanted to have.
This is open for discussion, past experiences, tips and opinions all welcome!

Isn't lockup achieved by the lower barrel lugs/feet bearing on the slide stop?

The link should only be helping with unlocking and camming the barrel down, no?

If the link is being used for lock up, wouldn't that cause failure of the link/link pin/lower barrel lug etc.

I'm not a gunsmith so just thinking out loud

Yes i know exactly my thoughts
I can understand shorter barrel links, but RK installed a #4 in my previous build, and shot a full year that way.

Might have been a case of lower lug being longer thus needing the longer link.

One thing is sure is no part will be installed or refit until i have read propoer manuals and possibly purchasing specialty tools and or jigs

Edit, will mark my lower lug with felt pen tonight and see how much contact it has with slide stop, then when installing a #4 let's say i could see if lower lug still makes contact
