Fitting a Lower to an IUR

So I got a chance to try my IUR on an Armalite lower this evening....and it fit like a glove. At this point I think my lowers are non-milspec. What is a little surprising is that AeroPrecision claims to be milspec (from their website) but according to the Colt Canada distributor, they are not.

I guess I'm in the market for another lower:mad:.

Not IUR related, but one interesting thing I noticed is that my PSA 7.62x39 upper fits perfectly on my Colt Defence lower, but the front pivot pin is REALLY difficult to insert when mounting it on my CC lowers. I almost wonder if the spec for Colt and Colt Canada is very, VERY slightly different.

It fits on My Omni, Armalite, Midwest Industries billet, Aero and of course my NEA billet. I prefer the Omni polymer to all of the others.

The only good thing about plastic lower is that they are cheap to make, and cheap to sell. Any generic lowers made from forging machined by a reputable shop is a step above polymer.

Ar lower is never meant to be plastic, the design and volume of material used in the front pivot pin ear and the rear buffer extension area are based on the strength of aluminum forging.

i had a colt le6920 lower that i mated with an iur, and i was not impressed with the sloppy fit of the two. had a definite wiggle to them and did not like my rifle rattling. i have also tried the iur with a lmt lower and the fit was super snug.

Via my vendor I asked the Colt Canada distributor (O'Dell) what lowers they recommend as a good fit for the CC IURs. This was the list that they sent back:

Colt Canada
Colt USA
Armalite
Daniel Defense
OMNI Hybrid lowers

Problem solved. Ordered and received a Spikes lower from Questar. They fit like a glove, so tight that an accuwedge isn't needed...no upper/lower movement whatsoever. I need to use a punch to move the pins but I'm sure that will loosen up over time.

Now if I can only find that darn pin detent that I heard bounce off the floor....

My IUR is an insanely tight fight with my CC Enhanced lower. I have to typically be forcing the upper and lower together while using something to push the pin through. I can push it about 1/4 inch with my fingers but I'm unable to get enough grip on the other side to pull it through. It seemed to get a bit easier after lubing up but even then. I'm hoping it will get easier over time but I've removed and added the upper on over a dozen times and it's still tough. It'll either get easier over time or I better get tougher hands.

I can finally put it together without any punches. Taking apart, I need a punch for the takedown pin. The pivot pin can be pushed out by hand. I've probably removed and reattached about 1.5-2 doz times. The takedown pin going in is super tight. I have to grab the upper with my left palm then wrap fingers and thumb on lower while pushing pin in.

So I was lubing up my AR for the range today and noticed that the Colt Canada lower came installed with what I assume is an "accuwedge" installed.

I pulled it out and put the IUR back on and tried the rear pin. Came out no problem this time (usually need a key or something to push it out) and still no play between the upper and lower.

So if you're having trouble with the rear pin being really tight on a CC rifle try that. It may get looser over time but I see no reason to have it there at all in my case.

I run my IUR upper on a DD lower. Perfect mating. Plan to install a DD LPK into one of my Motiuk lowers and see how the fit is-then can stop swapping lowers if it's acceptable.

My IUR on my BCM lower has just enough of a wiggle to trigger my OCD. Not a rattle, just a slight wiggle. Going to have to add an accu-wedge to my order next time I get some goodies.
