Bought a Tapco Stock for my SKS

Was looking for a new stock for my gun, saw one of these stocks at a pumpkin shoot and really liked it. Got one and went about installing it. Pluses with this stock are
Collapsible AR style stock, assembled rifle is 36 ½”-40 ½” long
Pistol grip
Integrated rail
Able to disassemble easily
Uber cool/ Uber cheap Black rifle look!!

First prove weapon (duh!!)
Disassemble as per normal

Assemble the Butt of the new stock into the stock (light taps and two bolts to tighten)
Slide the rifle into the stock, you may have to spread the stock slightly to get the rifle to fit. Now mount the pistol grip, you should get a ¼ socket drive for this. This part is very easy. Now disassemble the hand guard and install the new one……

After much cursing and swearing, and fussing you will reach this part.
The rear of the hand guard is held in by a pin running just below the gas tube. You are supposed to be able to “tap” this out…..right, sure

According to this article, the pin is supposed to go out one way.

The offender

But my rifle (Norcino, bought from Lever) had a pin that was the same size on both sides. In fact it turned out the pin was peened over on both sides. Careful use of a drift, hammer and swearing, along with carefully applied heat got the pin moving. I had to tap it both ways to get mine to move. Once it was out the end cover comes off easy and the gas tube can be assembled. Now come the next fun part, getting the pin back on, as the end cover does not line up exactly, this will take fiddling to get the pin in and tapped back into place. All done right……not quite, when trying to replace the top hand guard I realized that the hold down lever would not close, the handguard was a little high, there are some small “feet” which needed filing and with a little fiddling, and a gentle tap from a rubber mallet everything fell into place.

Haven’t tested fired the gun yet, but did function checks and every thing seems fine. I like the look of the gun and it feels good to hold and a bit better than the ATI stocks I played with.
The stock needs some of the sharp edges gently sanded. I found the mounting of the pistol grip rather “inelegant” basically a big screw.

I might look at putting a bolt though the stock to hold it in place. The designer was thoughtful however and made a springed flap that lifts up to revel access to the takedown button and the butt makes a handy storage place for those odds and ends that you got with the rifle. Haven’t tried fitting anything to the rail, will go to crappy tire and buy a cheap red dot.

Would I buy it again? So far the answer is yes.

Does the rail on the gas cover come off (i.e. is it screwed on?), is it plastic? and does it obstruct the iron sight at all?

I'm debating about whether to order one with or w/out the bayonet slot ...

ha ha been through the handguard replacement a few times before, never been an easy task, a vise, punches, patience, then fitting it, lots of fun LOL.

I just did this exact thing yesterday. Got mine from SKS Man. Great deal and I had the same fight with my gas tube. ended up having to grind the top of the gas tube holder thingy (where the pin went in) to get it back in place even after grinding the little feet of the cover.
$89.99 and $10.00 for the buttpad.
Looks great, now waiting on the red dot site to come from Ebay.

Tapco Stock - Bayonet Fit or Not?

Did you guys get a slotted stock to fit your bayonet or do you just remove the bayonet? I've got a chinese in the safe and some russians on order... not sure what'll end up wearing the Tasco so if I get a slotted one I'll have to make a call on that too (I think they sell different versions for blade vs. spike).

I ended up ordering the wrong one. I ordered a blade one figuring thats what mine was but it is called a spike as it did not fit into the slot. So if you order one get the spike one if yours is a chinese SKS. I ended up taking mine off and like the look alot better anyways.
If I was ordering another one I would get no slot.
HTH,
Dave

Well I took my new stocked SKS to the range on the weekend and I think I might have a problem with the gas tube. It pops up a bit when shot, I think I might have ground alil too much off the thing trying to get it to fit.
Any suggestions?

yes it obstructs the iron sites when the reddot is on, its the screws that block your vision, but, who needs em with a reddot, its fantastic!.... the only thing more dangerous than a man with a dremel, is a man with a bench grinder!! LOL just kidding Davel.............

The Tapco Fusion kits for SKS are really cool, with the removable mag conversion and the 20rd magazine. When I order mine I'll need to get it shipped to the U.S., go down there and pin it to 5rds before bringing it back. Either that or convince Tapco to send me the Fusion kit with a 5rd mag instead of the 20 rd mag. Their website has great info about doing the install too, like not filing the gas tube too much!

I found on one SKS that I put on a T6 that loosening the pin on the gas tube and rotating the end cap worked...if you can't get the cap completely off.
careful on the stock gas tubes as they are not strong.
Also the self tapping screw for the pistol grip works well with a lock washer and locktite. Goes in nice and tight...haven't had mine loosen and me and a buddy went halfers on a can-am crate...fired it all (eventually) with no problems.

During install try and pressure fit the handguard into the lock. This will make for a tight fit and less movement of the handguard. Don't cheap out on the red dot. I have a bushnell ($120.00) and find is well built and holds zero after much shooting. I can pop the gas tube off for cleaning repeatedly with no shift in point of impact. I had to fine tune the zero after 5 or 6 cleanings.

The screw holding the pistol grip on is needeed to allow for disassembly during cleaning. I have at least 1300 rounds through mine and the pistol grip has never loosened and I have never had to crank it tight.
