I just ordered a Boyd's Laminated Varmint Thumbhole stock for my 12FVSS. I was told that the stock would be shipped in January and that I would have to open up the barrel channel for my heavy barrel. I would like to get prepared as I want to do a precise job. Is opening the channel done with hand tools or can a router be used (with proper guides of course).

Richards micro fit will ask which do you want #1 or #3 for the channel. Funny these guys don't. I would be real careful with high speed and not tearing the laminations apart length wise if it gets jammed up. I would go hand tools, I'm A chicken when it comes to messen something up.

it will really depend on how much you need to open the barrel channel. better slow and steady with hand tools and paper than fast and oh s##t the router slipped and ruined my new stock.

I just find

a piece of round bar or a deep socket that is the same size or slightly larger, wrap it in 120 sand paper and slide it up and down the barrel channel. Every so often put the barreled action to check your clearance around the barrel. Finish with a finer grit paper then seal.

Some like to have a frefloated barrel with very little gap between the metal and the wood.

I look at it the more space the better for cooling.

I used a handle off a sidewalk edger and wrapped sandpaper around it. It was a roll of sand paper not sheets. I simply placed the stock in the gun vise and slid the handle back and forth about 4 inches or so. The profile of my costum barrel matched the profile of the handle almost perfectly and it was very easy to keep straight and actually straighten the fit a little better.

I have measured the diameter of the barrel and turned down a section of hardwood dowel to a slightly smaller diameter. Then I contact cement a piece of sandpaper to the dowel. With the thickness of the sandpaper, this generally makes up the difference plus.

The barrel is tapered, so that will be a bit of a challenge, but the ideas are good. Power tools are definitely out. Levi, the reason that they don't ask you which barrel you have is because it is what they call a "VIP" stock. In other works, it is 98% finished, you do the last 2%. The fitted stock is another US$100.00. I chose the VIP because I'll get it sooner too. Even though the Savage is pillar mounted, I will Devcon bed this one.

On another note, I will free float the barrel but not with a huge gap, this stock is vented under the barrel.

Thanks all for the good recommendations. :)
