Recently bought a barrel from a usually reliable source in the US. Their catalogue stated " fits original guns". Find that the TPI count on replacement part by Pietta is 26 while the one out of the original seems to be 30. I can get about 5 turns and then starts to bind. Any possibility of finding a 30 TPI die anywhere? My usual go to guy has a lathe that will not do 30 so I'm up against a wall here. Would like to get this back shooting again as it's the best piece I have found for reliability and sheer fun of shooting a 150 years old veteran. Any thoughts or suggestions wil be much appreciated. Cheers

I was told that the Uberti barrels are 30 tpi...but have no way of checking.
How did you find removing the original barrel?
I would like to do the same as you, but I am running into the same problems with barrel threads, dies, etc..

I may be talking out my ass here, never having seen the parts, however I do know that you cannot re thread something that is the same diameter to another thread pitch. You will end up with nothing left, especially since the pitches are so close together.

the above statement is correct in the sense of cutting over the existing threads. You have to cut new threads and make the barrel an 1" shorter more or less. The real issue is that most lathes do not cut 30 tpi meaning they do not have the correct gear ratio. Possible that some older lathes can do it if they use removeable gears to set up the cut ratio but many modern lathes have a quick change gear box and you are locked into what choices it offers.

What's the diameter of the barrel at the threads, and the caliber?
Which Remington are you trying to re-barrel?
Have you counted your barrel threads per inch yourself (30 TPI) or are you counting on internet "knowledge"?

Use a thread pitch gauge to check TPI. Sometimes a thread can be cut by using change gears, but you have to leave the split-nut lever locked and withdraw the toolbit and reverse the lathe to go back to starting point. Hard to do if cutting close to a shoulder. Sometimes you can cut an odd inch pitch thread close enough by using a metric pitch. For example an 30TPI thread is .846mm pitch. Closest International metric pitch appears to be .80 or .90. Thread can be cut a little loose, it only bears on the one side. May be a bit of a trial and error to face the shoulder to index the barrel correctly. Might want to cut a trial shaft before the barrel.
