Fitting replacement bolt to 340 savage

Replacement bolt closes on empty chamber,but will not close with round in chamber. What to do?

New bolt or used bolt?
Got headspace gauges?

Option 1. Use a reamer to set headspace.
Option 2. Loosen the barrel nut, reset headspace, tighten nut. Sights probably won't be TDC.

What is the clearance between the bolt nose and the barrel breech? This is also a consideration in fitting a bolt.

not quite that simple, i just put replacement bolt in a CIL830. Requires barrel removal and some lathe work. time consuming

If you're rifle is scoped it would be easiest to set the head space with the barrel nut and not worry about the sights being out of time.

Do all locking lugs bare on receiver?

If not, use lapping compound to lap in the lugs. That will give you more space to close the bolt.

You know there are 3 different types of bolts depending on caliber at least in 30-30 ?

Sorry to go off topic but Where did you manage to find a replacement bolt? I’ve been looking for a bolt and mag for a CIL 830 in 30-30 ... thx

bolt was picked up at a gunshow,actually with another action,barrel stub and mangled barrel nut. waiting to hear back from gunsmith.
