This is the selection I've worked out:

.22 LR - target,small game, plinking
.223 Rem - target, varmints
.308 Win - target, medium to big game, bush to cut-lines
7mm Rem Magnum - big game, wide open spaces
.375 H&H Magnum - really big game/bears, frak-off showpiece at the range, dangerous encounters with Canadian wildebeests and lions. :p

I tried to pick the most popular cartridges in each power class. What do you think? Any gaps? Overlaps? Better alternatives?

EDIT: Plus a shotty makes six. This is about rifle cartridges. :)

you could narrow that to 3- the 375 will do everything the 7mm and the 308 will- and it's WINCHESTER for 308- AND I'D SUB 375 ruger or weatherby for h&h- there are more efficent hull designs out there

Fixed. It's like a brain fart or something. :)

I can get .375 H&H anywhere. Efficiency is only part of the equation. Cost and availability is also important to me.

I don't handload either. Does this change your opinion? is there much point in blasting a whitetail at 100 yards with a factory .375 H&H load?
 
in my situation( east slopes of the rockies) it's the 308 w and 338 win mags that are king- i'd use the 338/275 for everything if it wasn't such a long , heavy rifle- where i go there's far less chance of 'bumping" into a deer than a moose, elk or bear- and the ranges are ALWAYS over 150 yards, and it's always a mulie- my 308 is loaded with 180s- that's the reason i said the 375 -anything is going to flop it you make a half -decent hit with that thing- you may even get a twofer if you do it right- but my local suppier has far more supply in 378 than 375 at the moment-
 
.22 Rimfire - small game & pest rifle
.257 Weatherby - long range varmint and long range medium game rifle
.30/06 - general purpose rifle for big game under 1000 pounds and for marksmanship training
.375 Ultra - big game over 1000 pounds and NA dangerous game
.458/.375 Ultra - dangerous game rifle
 
These answers will always vary due to location.

East of Manitoba, all you need is

1) 22LR
2) .308


Manitoba and west

1) 22lr
2) .223
3) .25-06
4) .338 win
 
22 Hornet
.223 Remington
.284 Winchester
.338 Winchester
.416 Rigby

I can reload them all and cover the world with overlap to spare. All of them except the .223 would be a bolt gun. The .223 would be a semi.
 
22lr- gophers and popcans
22-250 - Heavy barreled varmint rifle - Gophers and coyotes a looong way off
270wsm - Everything under a elk,total rifle weight under 7 pounds
300rum - Moose/Elk/Blackbear, and long range targets
416 Ruger - Griz
