Yes its been done, had 4 polls goingat the same time, of the 4 major counties than took the best or most voted for, did a 10 best poll , and out of that now the 5 best poll.

I think what DOUGLAS D means is what would the German soldier rather fight *against* not with. IMHO He'd much rather put his Mauser up against a LE than a Bren!

All you Canadian boys know that Garand was one of yours, right?
Born St Remi Quebec, 1888.
Thought your patriotism might get his weapon a few more well deserved votes.

JG BRYANT;
"mg 42 because it is the most enduring desing still in use today in some countrys and the us m60 is internale identical to a mg 42 "

My god man, how did you arrive at this conclusion ?? You have shot and used both ??

While I do agree that the Mg-42 updated is in use in many countries in 7.62 nato, albeit with heavier bolts and/or buffers to slow the rate of fire, however to state that the internals of both weapons are almost identical ?? Forget it....

You cannot assemble an Mg-42 incorrectly, it is almost "idiot proof" while the M-60 has numerous parts that can be incorrectly re-assembled.

Compare the quick barrel change, the Mg-42 simply requires the gunner to flip open the gate, pull out the hot barrel (with his asbestos glove or mitt) and slap in another, and the gun is ready in just a few seconds....

The same procedure on the M-60 is a bit more complicated and requires the gunner to expose himself more than with the Mg-42 ....

Also note that while the Mg-42 has the sights mounted on the receiver and requires no corrections upon barrel changing, the M-60 has the front blade on the barrel, only barrels that have been matched to the gun will permit proper sighting with minimum adjustment, the barrels are NOT fully interchangeable.

Indeed ,but the Garand was kind of our way of saying "Sorry" for also inventing the Ross.

LOL good one, can;t say we invented, we took a good design and ruined it is a better way to say it, as the 1910 model worked fine.

Like johnone was just saying they took a perfectly good weapon in the MG-42 and aborted it into the M-60.
The Mauser 98 got twisted into a Springfield 03 and even my beloved Bren is a poor stepchild to its Czech parent because of its misshapen curved magazine and rimmed cartridge.

M1 Garand for me, and who dare call the M1 an AMERICAN rifle?!... well... pretty much everyone... but John C. Garand, the inventor, was born in Quebec, CANADA, so HA! It's ours. The American's can keep their... ew... M16. Have fun with the .223 cal cartridge and all the jams :p

This is all moot anyway. Seems to me, this might be the greatest weapon, it sure changed a lot of attitudes real fast.

Just a little difficult to carry though, and the whole problem of getting out of the way when you've fired it. ;)

well this weekend should hit the 300 mark, see the mp44 is only 6 behind the lee enfild instead of 7, will the lee lose its third place position

now hold on there- it was the AMMUNITION that was at fault with the m16 , not the gun itself- some a/h changed the calcium carbonate content and that caused the breechblock to weld shut, or the case would separate, or a host of other 'problems"- what's NOT told is that there was a simple cure for this with a section of cleaning rod amd a wrap of emery cloth- once this was done, no more jams- and then there was the problem with the firing pin tips breaking off- however, the m16a2( which was fielded without the pressures of being at war) did some 5000 rounds full auto without a single misfeed- btw jam is somethng you put on toast
