I'm somewhat newly returned to shooting (I duck hunted in the 70's and 80's) last spring. So far I've been mostly shooting handguns and a rimfire rifle. One of the ranges I belong to has quite an active shotgun group that shoots a casual sort of five stand one night a week. Some of them have been urging me to join them so here is my question....What would be a reasonable gun to buy to give this a try? I'm thinking used so that if i end up selling it i might recoup most of my money. Would 6-800 buy something decent for a beginner?

If you are looking for something that holds value the best investment is a mid range gun. Cheap guns are had to resell as they are cheap to by new anyway, expensive guns are too niche and don't sell either. Similarly big names will also be easier to resell - browning beretta remington etc.
For 5 stand you could get away with a pump but you will find an auto or over under better for pairs. If you can stretch to 1500 you might be able to find a used browning or beretta ou and you won't lose a cent when you sell it; otherwise a beretta 390 remmy 1100 or browning auto would suit a lower budget.

My hunting buddy shoots five stand with a Beretta or a Browning O/U clays or trap gun. Browning Citori I think.
Imho if you're going to join a club and shoot high volumes of shot then you would be better off in the long run getting a gun that can handle it.
