Fixed 36x vs Variable 8-32?

So I just bought a new Anschutz and I need glass for it. I was originally thinking on just getting a fixed 36 power scope like a T-36, Sightron big sky, or Leupy 35x or something of the likes. I know you should be able to get better glass in a fixed scope vs variable for the same money but how does say a Sightron big sky 36x compare to a Sightron S3 8-32-56 for clarity, contrast, brightness?

I have had 2 different S3's and was not uber impressed but I also expect a lot from all the hype. I really don't want to get a big sky 36x42 and find out it looks like crap. I also don't want to buy a S3 with the extra weight to find out a fixed 36 has better clarity/brightness.

This will be mainly a bench gun and run on max power all the time. I'm a mag whore and I don't care what anyone says. At 100 yards I always wanted more that my 8-32 would give me.

I can only compare the Big Sky 36x42 with my SIII 10-50x60 LRMOA. I have one mounted on a Savage http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...r-Tactical?p=10165263&viewfull=1#post10165263

If you're looking for clarity, contrast and brightness .... the fixed 36x is ahead compared to the 10-50x60. This is according to how my 44 year old eyes are giving me and no I don't wear glasses yet.

Quality wise .... whatever you have read on web regarding Sightron reviews are pretty much bang on.

You can also related it like a camera lens. The fixed lenses have very good clarity compared to zoom lenses since light only travels to a few layers of glass on a fixed lens compared to a zoom lens. Basically the same principle with scopes.

Fixed power will be better. Having said that the Siii 8-32x56 is nice scope ( imo it is the best of the Siii offerings ) but much depends on budget. May I suggest you consider the NF BR 12-42x56 for not a lot more money or, if money isn't so tight, then please do try the S+B Pmii 12-50x56 as that is the very best I've used and I've used some nice glass.

I assume this is a .22. The big variables like nightforce and sightron may " overpower" your rifle a bit in size and weight. IMO the Weaver T36 would b the best fit and dollar value for your 100yd BR needs. Less than 18 OZ, 1/8 clicks. I have 3. all are clear and hold adjustments.

I can't agree that a 36x is best option for rimefire benchrest rifle. shooting at matches at Beachburg On.
The problem is mirage even at 100 Y when mirage is strong its a big problem, seeing target clearly, a 8x to 32x or bigger can be dialed down to 18 to 20x to get away from heavy mirage.
Beachburg is introducing 200 y shooting with rime fire and 200 y in heavy mirage a 36 x could be a big problem

Its very interesting ... I think most guys would find "dialing down" (as suggested) to eliminate/reduce the "apparent" effect of mirage on the target image is pretty well accepted approach to dealing with this distraction at the target ... but it is my 'opinion' (and only an opinion) that the mirage is still there - whether you choose to view it at the higher power or not. ... what that means I am not sure ... and in the end the approach that gives the best on target results is the right one for you!
